He shook his head with a frown. “I didn’t exactly have the time to stick around and do a thorough search. I was more concerned about making sure she got here safe.”

Liam nodded. He didn’t say another word.

That couldn’t have been a great sign.

“Well, as much as I love watching you three fighting over whatever is happening between you,” I said. “I have to head back to my coven and let Toni know the bad news.”

“Don’t forget about our plan,” Noah said.

I glared at him. “I didn’t. But this option hasn’t exactly been fully exhausted yet. Give me the chance to talk to my coven first and then we will go from there.”

“I’ll take you to your car,” Liam offered.

“I’m actually going to ride with Jacob. I have more things to discuss with him regarding my home. I’ll need to let my sisters know as much as possible. With the group reacting at the level they have been, I’m worried they could be a target too.”

Liam frowned, and his jaws clenched. He nodded though he didn’t seem convinced.

At the Coven House,I sat in Toni’s room at her desk while she sat on her mattress, absorbing the events I had caught her up on. I even told her about the heirloom.

She frowned. “Without the trinket, I can’t do anything. I’m sorry.”

I nodded. “I understand.”

“What are you going to do about your house?” she asked, setting her almond eyes on mine.

I shrugged. “I haven’t had much time to think about that with a clear head. I’ll find somewhere safe to stay until this all blows over, more than likely. I have to finish this case first. Then I’ll tackle the rest.”

“I think that might be a safe bet,” she said.

I suspected there was more she wanted to share. After a few moments of silence, she didn’t start talking, so I pried a little.

“Do you have anything on your mind?” I asked.

“Sort of,” she said.

“Wanna talk about it?” I asked.

She smiled, but the expression was a sad one. It wasn’t something I was used to seeing on my sister’s face.

“What is wrong?” I asked as concern started to fill my chest.

“You’re not going to like what I have to say, but I was doing some digging into some information while you were gone, and well…” She hesitated.

“Whatever you have to say, I’m sure things will be okay, just tell me,” I said.

She nodded. “There might be another way to find your friend.”

“Oh?” I asked. “Why would I not like that?”

“Because of what you would have to do in order to make that happen,” she said, staying cryptic.

“Me?” I asked.

She nodded.

“Toni, I would do anything to find Avery. Anything, anything.”
