“Yeah.”
“You asked my dad, for real? And he said yes? When did y’all talk? Where?”
“At your home. Your mother is still a delight to be around. He told me that you smile when you talk about me.” He pinched my cheek. “Is that true?”
“No. I be smiling because usually, the food is coming when he’s asking about you.”
He chuckled. “I see. I promised him that I’d take care of you for the rest of my life, if you let me.”
He reached in the nightstand and pulled out a black box. When he opened it, my eyes widened and my lips slipped apart.
“Oh, Diesel,” I sighed.
“Did I do good? I chose this myself. It was hard, but I wanted to choose something that I thought represented you. This was the first ring that popped out at me.”
It was a pear-shaped pink diamond ring. Even under the low light in the room, it sparkled. I couldn’t say a word. I couldn’t believe I was staring at the most beautiful ring I’d ever seen in my life.
“I was trying to hold out and ask you at the baby shower that you won’t let Quinci throw for you, but I think this moment was perfect. I hope it was perfect for you. I mean, if you want me to ask you at another time, I will. I mean I know that you don’t really like being the center of attention. Shit, Grey, say something.”
“Diesel, I love it, so much. Yes. Yes. I will marry you.”
“Yayyy! Awee!”
We both looked at the door.
Quinci’s nosy ass was on the other side of the door clapping, making me laugh.
“We’re naked, just in case you think about coming in here,” Diesel said.
“Come from this door, Quinci. My bad, bro.” Dymon said.
He grabbed my hand and slid the ring on.
“It fits my pregnant fingers perfectly.”
I grabbed his face and pressed my lip against his. When I deepened the kiss, he moved back.
“You think I’m going to reward you with dick after you’ve been bad today? Fuck no. I just couldn’t stand being mad at your pretty ass. Take your ass to sleep. Talking about somebefore I make life real hard out here for you.You don’t even know what the fuck that means.”
“Shol’ don’t, but it got the point across, didn’t it?”
He shook his head. “Hell no, it didn’t. I had to make a heavy donation to that store so Charlie’s Angels wouldn’t get arrested.”
He turned the covers back and got in the bed.
“I can show you how sorry I am.”
“You will. Just not tonight.”
I looked at him, blinking slowly. “Sir, please.”
He licked his lips. “Bring yo’ ass here, man. Damn.”
