I could see the worried furrow between her brows in the reflection in the mirror.
“I promise you won’t find me at the bottom of the Long Island Sound tomorrow.” Nico wouldn’t want to see me again after I told him the truth, but he wouldn’t hurt me.
She pressed her lips together, but nodded. “All right, but you know if he takes it badly, it could all end. Are you sure you’re ready for that?”
“No,” I said without hesitation.
I was terrified that this painful, uncomfortable feeling in my chest at the thought of losing him was just a tiny taste of what it would feel like soon.
“But I’m going to do it anyway,” I added.
Greta secured the last pin in my hair, and I reached for my suitcase. I only had enough money left for two or three more days here, so I’d started packing. Even my bank account was telling me my time here was up.
I rummaged through my bag for an outfit for the evening. Dinner with Nico’s family wasn’t really how I would have chosen to end the thing between us, but Nico deserved the truth.
“I guess the next best-friend thing I’m supposed to do is have lots of ice cream ready?” Greta said, pulling out the underthings that matched the peach-colored halter-style sundress I pulled out of the suitcase. “Though, I’m also good with having a rebound guy ready. More my style, you know?”
I did know that. “Ice cream will be fine.”
She frowned exaggeratedly but then laughed. “Then I guess all that’s left to do is get you dressed? What time is lover boy going to be here?”
I checked my watch.Crap.“Twenty minutes.” Then added, “Could you request a new card key for me? Mine stopped working.”
Greta nodded. “I’ll call the front desk later.”
Nico had only dropped me off long enough to run some sort of errand, then he said he would be back for me.
I stripped off my clothes, heedless of Greta’s presence in the room.
Ever since Nico, I felt differently about my body. It wasn’t that I was ashamed of it before, it was just different now. The way his eyes grew heated when he looked at me, the way he worshipped every inch of my body with his hands and his lips; I felt a kind of confidence I wasn’t sure I would ever have known without him.
It took me precisely three minutes to get dressed and then I tried to sit still long enough for Greta to coat my nails and toenails in a peach shade lacquer that matched my dress.
I wanted to make a good impression, I supposed, but really, I knew Nico liked the nail polish. Well, he liked to watch the color on my fingertips disappear when he had me put my fingers inside myself.
I shook my head, as if the physical act of it helped any.
It’s over, I reminded myself over and over again.
A knock sounded on the hotel room door. I shook my fingers and blew on the tips one last time. I hugged Greta in the living room, but she followed me to the door.
When I opened it, my breath hitched. His emerald eyes flashed with both fire and steel as they held mine. His full lips were quirked in a smirk. My ears tingled at the memory of his deep growl vibrating through me.
I glanced down, my cheeks flushed.
After tonight, I might never see him again. That freaking sucks.
His eyes flickered to Greta and dismissed her before his heated gaze settled on me.
“Ready?” he said, holding out his hand.
He looked a little disgruntled, like perhaps he intended to slip in a little sex before heading to dinner.
It was probably for the best that we couldn’t since I couldn’t imagine sitting at his parents’ dinner table just moments after sitting on their son’s cock.
