I finish up my coffee, and I’m just about to stand up and leave.
What the fuck?I shake my head.Am I imagining this…?
Chapter 20
Kara
I’vejusthadnotificationthat the trial starts in a month. My lawyer wants to see me and go through the statements. I have tried every trick in the book to not come back just yet, but she insisted. I have documents that need to be signed in front of a witness and in her office. It’s all a bit much.
Her offices are also too bloody close to West’s. I told her my visit was to be completely confidential, and I didn’t want anyone to know I had been here until after I am back in France. I still can’t deal with my feelings for North. He hasn’t even tried to get in touch with me. I know I said I needed space, and I know he said he understood, but come the fuck on. He should have tried harder. If the shoe were on the other foot, I would have tracked the fucker down and dragged his ass back home.
Would I have gone? Would it have made it worse? No one knows. Because he didn’t fucking try. My anger grows at the thought of him just wandering around without a care in the world. His booming laugh and his flirty smile. Yeah, there is no way on this earth he’s kept his dick in his pants for a whole month. The guy is like a sex addict. Then it hits me again like it always does when my train of thought goes this way.
Has he met someone else?
I’m early for my appointment, so I decide I’m going to risk it and grab a quick coffee. I know West likes his coffee from The Hideaway, but he usually sends one of the reception team to get it for him. Sutton told me that North stays home most days or so she thinks, because she doesn’t see much of him. I should be safe.
I walk around the streets from the tube station and down the road towards the coffee shop. I’m just about to cross over the street when my heart hits the floor.
North is sitting in the window with West and a blonde. He looks completely relaxed, sitting on a bench, and the woman is sitting right next to him. Too fucking close to him. He is laughing with the woman, and it all looks very fucking cosy.
I want to storm right over and ask what the hell is going on, but I don’t have that right anymore. I also didn’t want to see him today or anytime soon.
I dip my head and turn and walk in the direction I came from, away from North and away from more heartache. My world crumbles around my feet with each step I take away from him.
Two hours later, I leave the solicitor’s office. I’ve signed all the documents, and she has brought me up to speed with the incidents in the prison. If I were to be brutally honest, I wish someone would just finish the job. Then, I can move on, clear and free. I turned my phone off before going into the lawyer’s office as I know my attention span is the same as a goldfish and anything can and would distract me. I hold down the button and put it back in my pocket. Not even a minute later, my phone is buzzing like it’s blowing up.
Sutton: Hey, how are you?
Sutton: Are you ok?
Sutton: Where are you?
Sutton: Your phone is switched off. Why?
Sutton: Kara, please text me back. I’m worried.
Shit! I can’t have her worried. Not in her state. I press the call button on the phone. She answers immediately.
“Hey, baby mama, I’m okay, no need to worry. I was just busy doing some paperwork. Are you okay?”
“Yeah.” She sighs. “I was just really worried when your phone went straight through to voicemail. It must have been some important stuff if you switched off your phone.”
“Yeah, it was.” I don’t want to lie to her, but I don’t want her to know I’m here, either. She will want to see me, and I don’t think I could go back to France if I saw her today. She is my best friend, and I have missed her so much.
“So, where are you?” she casually asks.
Fuck! So much for not lying.
“Oh, just in town. I’m heading for the station to head back home now.” I’m not lying.
“Hmm, which station?”
“What? Why do you want to know that?”
“Because, Kara, there is no station in the town where you are supposed to be. Now, tell me the truth. Where the hell are you? I swear to you I will give birth to these babies today if you don’t tell me.” She growls.
Shit!
