Callie jumped to her feet with a small squeal and headed for a patterned bag that screamed boutique. “Oh my goodness, you justhaveto see what I bought Peanut and Pebble!”
J’s protests about the nicknames fell on deaf ears as Callie returned to Darren’s lap and extracted a tiny parcel wrapped in thin paper. She held up the first pint-sized suit andawwww’dover it to Darren before turning it around so I could see.
The grey baby suit had gold triangles all over and read,As cute as my Auntie.Callie draped it over her knee with care, then held up another. This one, also grey, had gold zigzags all over with the words,My Uncle Rocks, complete with the universal hand gesture for rock-on.
“Aren’t they just the cutest, babe?”
Darren’s eyes flicked to me briefly before looking back at the ridiculously small clothes on her lap. “Sure are, hermosa. They’re perfect.”
His arm around her waist tightened, and he pulled her back to meet his lips, where he planted an incredibly sweet and tender kiss.
Lozza chose this moment to get up and start collecting her crap. “I gotta get going, babes. Marc’s taking me out for dinner, and I need at least two hours to get ready. Thanks for today. It was fun watching you go all pregzilla out there—right, Callie?”
They both snickered, then laughed harder when Jax pointed two accusatory fingers. “You two bitches are a bad influence!” She then smirked at Loz. “Have a great night. Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do.”
Lozza’s words echoed down the hallway as she headed to the front door. “Too late, girlfriend. But I’m not the one who got knocked up.”
“Bitch!”
“You are! Love your face, byeeeee.”
Jax snickered long after the door closed, and I took the opportunity toreallylook at her while she sat unguarded. It swelled my heart to see how happy and glowing she was. When she smiled widely like this, it reached her eyes, making them crinkle at the corners and the tip of her nose pull down slightly. Her cheeks were tinted pink with the heat, and she looked absolutely gorgeous in her short pale pink summer dress. Her caramel skin teased me, and her legs looked so damn smooth…
I’d just settled into a sexy daydream when the mouth attached to those legs started talking.
“Earth to Jace! Were you having filthy daydreams again?” Jax called me out, and I quickly schooled my expression to seem indifferent.
“Nope.”
“I can read what you’re thinking, and I’ve seenthatexpression many times before, right before you’ve—”
“Oh, c’mon!”Darren exclaimed. “You keep it in your pants until we go. And you, goddammit, Jax, stop giving him such a hard time.”
“Take sides why don’t you. Well, I’m on Callie’s side; you’re a dumbass.”
Callie shouted a laugh, then slapped a hand over her mouth in a failed attempt to smother it. Smirking devilishly, Darren took her jaw in his grasp and angled her mouth to his. She kissed him back through her laughter, then hummed as the kiss settled her.
Afterward, when Daz’s eyes met mine, I arched a brow and chuckled around the lip of my beer. He always had a way with women.
“AsI was saying,” Jax rerouted the conversation. “What’s for dinner? Darren and Callie are going to hang out.”
I held up my bottle. “Pizza and beer?”
“Yes to pizza and beer. No to monopoly,” Darren drawled, conjuring up memories of the game three and a half years ago that ruined me and Jax.
“Too soon?” he added when he received a death glare from both me and my woman.
“Yeah, man, too soon,” I deadpanned.
TWENTY-SIX
JAX
Loud, insistent knocking echoed down the hallway, competing with the music I was singing along with. Having no idea where Jace was, I hauled my ass out of the chair in front of the air-cooler with a frustrated growl.
I tried my best not to waddle to the front door; being eight months pregnant with twins was hard work! I was an enormous, heaving, sweaty mess with swollen ankles and a sassy attitude. And don’t even get me started on my oily hair that was currently scrunched into a messier than usual bundle on top of my head.
Thoroughly breathless, I swung the door open and froze when two things hit me.
