ChapterEight
“A true relationship is two imperfect people refusing to give up on each other.”
Unknown
They talked on the phone every night and texted several times a day.
They’d even done a few video chats.
But when Knox pulled into her driveway and she saw him in the flesh, Maddie felt like it had been far too long.
He must have felt the same way because he walked up to her like a man with a purpose and swept her up in his arms and kissed her like he was starved for her. They barely made it through the front door before he had her pinned to the wall. It was all heat and need and with her legs firmly wrapped around his waist, she was more than willing to forgo the bed and just let him have her right there.
It was completely exhilarating to have a man want her like this. The way Knox moved against her, the urgency in his kiss, the way his magnificent hands touched her pretty much made her feel like the sexiest woman in the world.
And for someone who struggled with self-esteem for a lot of years, that was saying something.
Knox abruptly broke the kiss, lifted his head, and breathlessly looked at her. “That was the longest three hours of my life. I can’t believe I didn’t get pulled over for speeding. I did eighty-five pretty much the whole way here.” His eyes scanned her face as he slowly licked his lips. “It felt like forever.”
“I know exactly what you mean,” she panted, still pinned to the wall by his body. “I couldn’t wait to leave the clinic earlier. My last patient knew something was up because he could tell that I was distracted.”
“Good,” he growled, gently nipping at her throat. “I like knowing that I distract you.”
This was so not the way she thought they were going to be. She knew how much she was looking forward to seeing him, but she never imagined he’d be so…enthusiastic. It was a heady feeling and there was a part of her that still felt like maybe this was a dream. How was it possible that they could still feel this way about each other after so many years? And was it a good sign? Did it mean they were destined to be together? To stay together? To finally have their chance at the future they thought was lost?
Before Maddie could continue with that train of thought, Knox was kissing her again, and her mind went blissfully blank. Hell, she’d be more than happy to never have another thought if it meant she and Knox could stay like this.
Her hands raked through his hair before grabbing on and holding him to her.
Not that he needed the help. He seemed more than happy to stay right where he was.
“Bed, Maddie,” he said against her lips. “Where’s your bed?”
This was it.
This was her chance to be a complete vixen and do something she’d never done before.
“No,” she replied firmly in between kisses. “No bed. Right here. Right now.” Swallowing hard, she wasn’t sure if he was on the same page, so she added, “Please.”
In an instant, she realized they were most definitely on the same page because Knox’s hands were suddenly everywhere—tugging at her pants, palming her breasts, and it was only then that she realized the error in her plan.
There was simply no graceful way to get undressed while her legs were around his waist and her back was against the wall.
But that didn’t stop her from trying.
Her shirt went flying and it was crazy how determined Knox was to get her naked. When he put her on her feet and dropped to his knees in front of her, she was pretty sure it was one of the sexiest moments of her life. He looked up at her with such blatant desire that was more powerful than any touch.
“This is crazy,” she whispered.
“In the best possible way,” he murmured against her bare stomach as he tugged her jeans down over her hips.
With her hands back in his hair and his name a breathless chant, she knew she was going to remember this moment forever.
“You really didn’t have to do this.”
“Are you kidding? After all the takeout we got while I stayed with you, I thought it would be nice to have a home-cooked meal.”
It sounded a little too domestic and normal—especially after the wild against-the-wall sex from less than an hour ago.
