Chapter 14

Eric

I wake up the next morning when something moves next to me. I’m not used to anyone sleeping in my bed, so I peek open my eyes and see Angela cuddled up next to me with nothing on. I scooch closer to her so that I can press my whole body against her. It feels perfect. Nothing can ruin this moment.

Last night was amazing. It was like the combination of not seeing each other the whole week, her finally being healed enough for sex, and my sudden confession of love to her erupted into the best sex I’ve ever had. I never want to leave this moment.

I hear my phone buzz on my nightstand again. What is going on? This is the third time it’s done that this morning. Don’t people know it’s a Saturday morning. I don’t want to talk to you yet. I sigh and reach over to see what’s going on. I see Alaric’s name on the screen.

Alaric: Call me when you wake up.

Then a text from a few minutes later.

Alaric: Seriously you never sleep this late. Wake up. It’s important.

The other text is from one of my site managers.

Bill: Hey wanted to give you a heads up. That flooring guy from the south side started talking shit about you last night. Something about his daughter. He called a couple of the contractors he’s friends with and word spread back to me. No one trusts that guy anyway, but wanted to let you know.

I sit up in bed when I read that and Angela stirs next to me. “What are you doing? Come back to bed.” She reaches for me, and I give her a reassuring smile. “I’ll be right back. I just have to make a call.”

She groans, but I just kiss her forehead and hop out of bed. I dial Alaric the second I’m out of the room. He answers on the first ring. “It’s about time. What, did the girl keep you up all night?”

I sigh. “Yes. But that’s not important. What’s going on?”

He sighs then too. “I’m coming over.” He hangs up without saying anything else, and a few seconds later he’s walking through my front door.

His face doesn’t look happy. I take a deep breath. “Let’s hear it.”

He frowns at me. “What have you heard so far?”

I glance down at my phone. “Bill just texted that her dad is talking shit. What does that mean?”

“From what I’ve heard so far he’s just telling people you’re sleeping with his daughter who’s only 26. The couple of guys I’ve talked to said it was weird because he was talking about his daughter like she was a slut. They don’t really know what’s going on fully.”

I clench my fist at my side. “He called her that right to her face in front of me” I say angrily.

Alaric opens his eyes in shock. “What a fucker.”

I sigh. “Tell me about it. That doesn’t matter though if he’s got friends that listen to him. I need to do damage control.”

Alaric shrugs. “I doubt anyone will agree with him. The man’s an ass. I can help though. What do you need?”

I sigh. “I don’t know. What do you think is better? Laying low or bringing her out in public so people know it’s not just a fling.”

Angela walks out just then. “What’s going on?”

I look back at her and smile. “Everything is fine. I’ll be back in a minute.”

She just crosses her arms over her chest. “The fuck? You think I’m an idiot. You’re obviously talking about me. Cut the bullshit.”

Alaric just laughs, and I glare over at him. “Can you give us a second?”

He just smiles. “Sure. Call me if you need anything. I’m going to reach out to a few guys to see how far he’s trying to take this.” I nod, and then he walks out.

I turn back to Angela who is wearing one of my T-shirts again. Damn she looks sexy. I walk up to her and wrap my arms around her and kiss up her neck. She pushes against my chest. “Oh no you don’t. Tell me what’s going on.”

I just shrug. “It’s not a big deal. Your dad is just talking shit to a few people in the construction business.”
