So lame, I know.

“Yeah, it was…” She sighs like a sap. “It was awesome.”

I sigh as well, but mine is not a sappy, swoony sound. More like a ‘get to the point already’ sigh.

“But the thing is, I got so carried away when we were…you know.”

I can’t hide a sneer of disgust here. I really don’t want to hear the private details of anyone’s hookup, but one that involves Leo?

Ew.

I mean, not to sound too immature or anything but…

Ew. Just ew.

The guy makes my stomach turn just walking down the halls with that smug smile of his. I don’t need the image of him and April burned into my poor brain, thank you very much.

“...and I then, of course, Vincent and Addie showed up and there was drama, and then—”

“April.” I stop short to face her.

“Yes?”

“Is there a point?”

She winces slightly and toys with a lock of her curly brown hair. “I have a favor to ask.”

I just barely hold back another sigh. I should have known that was at the heart of April’s mood shift. The girl wanted something. Of course she did.

“What is it?” I ask as I turn back toward the cafeteria.

“I left a ring there at the house,” she says.

“Why don’t you just go get it?”

She sighs. “Well, I planned on getting it at the party. Rudolph Barons’ house isn’t one where you just…show up unannounced, you know?”

I grimace. I did know. I wasn’t terribly familiar with the old man and his wife, but I worked enough parties at their home to know that they were intimidating.

“Have Leo bring it to school for you,” I say.

“He’s being all weird around me,” April says. “I think he’s a little freaked out by what happened between us.” She gives me this knowing look that I despise. “You know how Leo can be.”

That sneer of revulsion curls my lips again before I can stop it. I do know how Leo can be. The guy’s allergic to commitment. A fact that makes me wonder what these girls in our school are thinking when they throw themselves at him.

But then again, I already know that too. Every girl thinks she’s going to be different. Even April is stupid enough to believe that she’d be something more to him than just another hookup.

Lame.

I almost feel sorry for the girl. Almost. I don’t really, though, because she still seems so very pleased with herself. As if getting Leo to kiss her is some big accomplishment.

Please.

Leo is a guy, in every clichéd sense of the word.

“Anyway, I just don’t want to bring it up to him,” April’s saying as she hurries to keep up with my pace. “Especially not now when he’s acting so weird.”

I press my lips together, a surge of tension making my insides tighten.
