“Where are we?”
“Beats me. The location of Purgatory is a well-kept secret. All I know is there are new players added every week.”
“Jesus. How long have you been here? Where are Bones and the Cajun? Can they help us off this island?” My friend’s entire body shut off at the mention of her friends.
“I don’t know where they are.”
“What do you mean, you don’t know? The last time I saw you, you were at death’s door, and the three of you escaped together.”
“We did, but we got into a disagreement and parted ways.”
What? That didn’t seem right. The three of them had been inseparable. It would take the mother of a fight to separate them.
Before I could ask further questions, however, she changed the subject.
“They grabbed me in Vienna almost three years ago. I was living my life and running an errand when I got lazy. They snuck up behind me and plucked me a couple of streets from my home.”
“Did anyone see them?”
“I’m sure someone did. It was the middle of the day.”
“So, there might be someone looking for you?”
“No.” Her answer was short and didn’t welcome questions.
“Tell me everything.”
“We don’t have time. They will begin filling up the van the minute Cerberus’ fight is done.”
“Is that goose egg really your man?”
“Not really, no. He’s what I’d call an occasional ally. Why?”
“Because he has no chance against Eric.”
“Good. I hate the fucker.”
Of course she did. Surinam has loved only two people in her life, and they weren’t here.
“I’m guessing you know the new guy well?”
“Yes, he’s my husband.”
“Ouch.” Suri knew me well enough to know I was attracted to strength.
“We need to get out of here.”
“No shit, Sherlock. What do you think I’ve been trying to do for the past few years? Playing Uno?”
I now remembered why I immensely disliked Surinam while I was at the behavioral camp.
“Lose the attitude, Suri. We need to work on this together. Unless you would prefer to stay here?”
The crazy woman chuckled sheepishly. “Sorry, habit. So, what’s your plan?”
“Do you know where the control room is?”
“Yes, it’s the first building on the east.”
