From where I’m sitting, everything looks perfect. I refocus on what I was asked to do by my brother and go stand in the threshold.
I clear my throat, alerting her to my presence, and lock my gaze with hers in the reflection of the mirror.
“I don’t know why you keep making a fuss, you’re beautiful to me.”
“Thank you. Those are kind words from you. Now, are they attached to a favor or request?”
“Those words are genuine. You’re an absolute vision. But we do have sort of a favor to ask. A change of plans if you will.”
“And what’s that?”
“Sebastian spoke with our parents and Mum is insisting that we come for dinner. We don’t want to have the world brought down on us if we don’t show up.”
“I don’t see a problem with that. I can always order something from the in-room menu.”
“No, you will be coming with us. You get to meet the parents of your clients and learn a bit more about their beginnings. Maybe it can help you from a PR perspective.”
“You know, it could add depth to your persona and provide some funny anecdotes I’m sure your parents will have. Okay, let me change and we can go.”
“‘Change’? Oh no, love. There is no time for that. Mum gets very upset if we’re not on time. She’s fixing a big meal for us, you know.”
“Okay. So, we should go get a car service and head over there.”
“Already done. Sebastian took care of those details while you were getting dressed. You’re in our town and we’re gonna treat you to a relaxing evening.”
She glances around, seemingly out of sorts since she’s not busy doing anything. “Um,” she begins. “I am at a loss of words. Can’t believe I’m about to say this but,” she takes a deep breath. “Simon, lead the way.”
“All right.” I take her arm and interlock it with mine. “Let’s go, my love.”
Our gazes lock for just a minute but I swear there is something in the way she’s staring at me. It’s not out of her job position, or a lover’s eye-lock, but this is a look of trust.
I sweep an errant curl behind her ear. “Simply perfect,” I chime and open the door, allowing her to cross the threshold first. I follow a mere half a second behind and regain my position at her side. We enter the lift and instruct the operator to take us to the first level. While we ride down, Myka turns to me to speak.
“Shit, I don’t have anything to take to your home as a token of appreciation.”
“If it’ll make you feel better, we can stop off at one of the corner markets or off-licenses.”
“Sounds great. What do your parents like?”
“Mum is a girly girl, much like yourself. A nice bottle of wine would be great. Dad likes a good Scotch.”
“Can you help me pick one out? I want them to know their sons are in good hands with me and CAJ Entertainment.”
The sting of her adding the name of the company bites my heart just a bit. I thought a connection was building between us on a more personal level, but it would seem at the end of the day, it is only business.
“Sure, I’ll help you.”
We approach the waiting cars where Sebastian, Mikey, and Stix are standing.
“It’s about time, mate,” Sebastian scolds, holding the door open.
Myka slides in first and I follow.
“Yeah, we were on time, unlike you. Maybe Ms. Johnson should admonish you for being tardy and making her late too,” Mikey adds then closes the door.
“Ay, how do you know she wasn’t the one that was running a bit behind?” I call out from the window.
“If she, were it’s because of you Simon. Now come on, Mum’s waiting.”
