Kay, Adam, and Marco just stared at him, stunned. The news that Kay was mated… yeah, that was a big one.
"I think that’s everything. You’re free to go," the detective added grimly. "Let’s stay in touch in case the Dawson family decides to press charges. And you still need to update us about the… suppressant situation."
"Sure," Marco nodded.
As Kay stood, I noticed both alphas lingering near the hallway wall, waiting for him to walk by.
So I slipped my arm around his shoulders, positioning myself between him and the officers, and that’s how we left the precinct.
Even out in the parking lot, I kept my arm around him, and he let me.
"What did he mean by saying Kay’smated? That’s not possible, Rain," Adam said, looking at me.
"He claimed he smelled my Allure scent on Kay instead of his husband’s. That’s all I know." I deliberately left out what I thought I saw on Kay’s gland, and the rest of my conversation with Moor. I needed to sort it out in my own head first.
No one said anything else. Betas couldn't detect mating status scents anyway, and Kay was clearly in no mood to talk. He walked straight to the car. Once inside, I moved closer and wrapped him in an embrace. He leaned his black-haired head on my shoulder.
I lowered myself a bit and kissed his temple. He didn’t pull away. I just… needed to be near him. My body constantly felt this sweet, aching pull.
Marco started the engine, and we pulled into traffic. Kay stared out the window, pensive, his mouth forming a faint pout. The urge to kiss him hit me again as I caught sight of those soft, dark-pink lips. Then Kay turned and met my eyes, clearly catching me looking, but he didn’t say anything about it. Instead, he asked,
"Is it true? Did you really mate me?"
I looked into his deep navy eyes, unsure how to answer. Those impossibly long lashes were so distracting I could’ve just sat there, gawking like an idiot. No wonder those alphas had gone crazy over him, he was stunning.
Focus, Rain. Don’t stall.
"I’m not sure, Kay. But it looks like it. He picked up a different Allure scent on you. I didn’t know it would happen." I paused. "Are you mad?"
His lashes fluttered. "The last thing I had from him. The mating mark."
The words made me uneasy, but I still managed to say, voice a bit hoarse, "Not the last, Kay. You’re carrying his child."
He went quiet.
"Yeah, you’re right. I just can’t believe it worked so fast, that we might really be mated after two and a half weeks." His voice had that uncertain, confused edge.
"Well. Looks like it."
I couldn’t just brush it off, not when it clearly meant something big to him.
So I asked gently, "How do you feel about it? Is it upsetting?"
"Rain, we’ve only known each other for such a short time. I let the biting thing happenonlybecause I thought it wouldn’t do anything. That’s not how it’s supposed to work."
"I know, Kay. It’s surprising to me too. You wanted to wait before moving forward, and I was fine with that. I… really didn’t expect this outcome. It shouldn’t be possible."
Kay gave a small shrug, like he was trying to play it off, but I knew it wasn’t easy for him.
After a few seconds, I added, "At the very least, maybe you can feel safer knowing I’ll protect you even more fiercely now."
He nodded slowly. "True. I felt it at the police station, your…protection. Thank you for that. Being surrounded by aroused alphas makes me really uncomfortable."
Could I resist saying it? Nope.
"I actually felt your unease. I sensed it inside."
He flinched, and I instantly regretted saying it that way.
