For a moment, I struggled against the urge to lie. "Well, I had this tiny flicker of thought."
Moor didn't answer; he stared at the wall above me, looking disgruntled. So I added, "Wouldn't it be just a bit too wonderful? Too miraculous? Suddenly, I'm divorced, he's widowed, and this incredible thing happens: we are fated mates!"
I hesitated, a realization hitting me.
"That would overshadow everything, their marriage, and I hate to do that to Kay," I added in a much quieter tone.
Moor snorted with an almost angry grimace. "Stop being silly. You should be overjoyed, you escaped far too easily from the serious charges we were about to drop on you, but you need to have it proven for the court. And there's also the other thing, the blockers. There's still a slight possibility these are all some strange side effects of them. You need to provide irrefutable proof, either that the blockers influenced your behavior or the other thing."
"Should I go off blockers and check if I could scent Kay's Allure in full intensity?"
"I wouldn't recommend that. If it's the blockers that caused this, they would need to analyze your blood or run some tests on you."
I was deep in thought for a moment. It was all a bit too much for my head, and my body started to feel the effects of the post-fighting mode state, so I was getting tired. I lowered my eyes to the tips of my fingers. They were reddened and sore. I could bet that during my attack on the brothers, my claws had already started moving beneath the surface of my skin, which caused the slight swelling now.
The whole situation was so fairy-tale-like.
In any case, I really needed to get to the bottom of it. The only problem was that I’d rather not force my suspicions on Kay for now. Saying to him,"Listen, I'm your True Mate. Forget your bond with Maurice; it wasn’t that special after all,"would be a bit too much.
Moor mindlessly tapped his pen on the table, and I sighed.
"Soooo, what else do you want to ask me?"
The detective still seemed agitated by the TM conversation, his gaze absent. But finally, he said, "Just go through the events as you saw them yourself. And that would be all."
I repeated to him my recollection of what happened, but while finishing my statement, I felt a sudden wave of fear. I looked around, a bit confused. "What's going on?"
Moor raised his eyebrows.
"Something is off." I quickly realized what was happening. "Kay is distressed. I need to go!"
I sprang to my feet and stormed out of the room, leaving Moor gaping.
As I opened the door, I saw the two alpha policemen we had met earlier standing over Kay, with Adam and Marco on either side of him. I caught the last line of one of the alphas' sentences: "…you're welcome to join us at the pub."
"Please, gentlemen, do not disturb him. He is expecting," Marco tried to defuse the situation, while Adam stood up, attempting to position himself between Kay and the policemen. But Marco and Adam were no match for the alphas and were, of course, completely ignored.
Alphas have testosterone levels more than 1000% higher than betas. They have denser muscles, more fast-twitch fibers in their muscle tissue, stronger joints, shorter reaction times, and so on. An alpha's strength is comparable to that of a male gorilla.
I saw exactly that fear flicker in Adam and Marco’s eyes—the crushing inadequacy of standing against two alphas, but it vanished the second they noticed me.
"What's going on here?" I growled, approaching them.
"Nothing," the taller one shrugged. "We just asked if he wanted to join us at the Marvel Bar. There's a Beer Fest going on."
My eyes went straight to Kay. I couldn’t stop him if he wanted to go, but his face told me everything I needed to know. He was absolutely uncomfortable.
"Kay, do you want them to leave?" I asked quietly.
"Yes."
Of course, the alphas couldn’t brush me off like they did with the beta brothers. The moment I stepped closer, I saw their pupils dilate.
"You heard him. Please leave," I said, my voice cold, that low rumble creeping in again.
One of them turned toward me, lip curling like he might growl, but before he could, Detective Moor appeared behind me, frowning.
"Time to go, boys. Kay’s already mated to this gentleman, and you should be able to tell. Leave him alone," he said with fake lightness, though his expression was anything but. Something told me he wasn’t thrilled about how this had played out.
