“No complaints from my side.” I looked at our drinks. We hadn’t even drank half of them. “Do you want to stay until we’re finished with the drinks or do you want to go now?”

“Eager much?” he teased, but his whole demeanor said that he didn’t mean anything by it. “To be honest, if I down that one, I’ll probably be in no shape to drive in about fifteen minutes, so… let’s just go? Do you need to tell your friends you’re going?”

My friends.

They weren’t friends. At least not yet. They were acquaintances, people I’d barely met, but… just taking off without a word was rude and would probably destroy any chance to become friends, which would be bad. I’d enjoyed the time I’d actually spent with them.

“Yeah, I should at least say goodbye.” My tone implied I wasn’t happy about that. Especially because it meant maneuvering the crowds on crutches again.

Yay.

“Are you able to drive?” A look of concern crossed his face, as he really acknowledged my crutches for the first time. Usually I hated that, people assuming I couldn’t do stuff because of my knee, but in this case… I was already three craft beers and half a cocktail in. My knee wasn’t the problem, but the fact that I rarely drank alcohol was. I wasn’t drunk, I didn’t even feel tipsy, but that could always change, and I didn’t want to start my life in the USA by getting charged for drunk driving.

“I probably shouldn’t because I’m not used to drinking more than one beer,” I explained. “Do you want to take an… Uber? That’s the thing you’ve got here, right?”

“You don’t have Uber?” Zayne asked curiously.

“No.” I shook my head. “We have taxis. I think Uber wanted to start in Germany… or they did? But there was a court verdict that forbade it, so it’s not a thing where I’m from.”

Zayne’s eyes widened. “That’s… wow. Why did they… you know what? That’s a conversation for later. Tell your friends goodbye, I’m gonna tell my friends goodbye, and we can meet out front afterward. I’m still fit to drive, and I don’t live that far away… At least, I assume my place is closer than yours.”

I nodded, though I had no idea whether it really was, but I… I really didn’t want to bring Zayne to my mansion. He obviously liked me for me. For being an unemployed cripple with no ability to flirt whatsoever. Showing him I had money would somehow… taint what we had.

“See you in five,” Zayne said before hopping from the barstool and disappearing into the crowd.

It was good he’d already left because I definitely didn’t look as elegant trying to get down from the stool as he did.

IS IT HIM?

Chapter 4

Luke

Zayne was right; his house was a lot closer to the bar than my cabin.

It was a cute house, at least as far I could tell in the dark. A light color, probably white or cream or something like that, with a big porch across the front and a huge garden. Somewhere in the back, I could see the shadow of a second building.

We stopped in his driveway and got out of his truck.

Fuck, Corbyn was right, getting out of a truck was far easier than getting out of my BMW.

Scheiße.That meant I really needed a second car.

“Soo… this is my house. In the shed over there” — Zayne pointed his finger in the general direction of the second building — “is where I make and currently store my soaps. I’ll give you the tour… tomorrow.” Thanks to his sultry tone, I didn’t have to guess why he didn’t want to give me a tour now. And I was definitely on board with whatever he’d planned.

Zayne was beautiful.

Stunning.

Andmine— at least for the night.

I couldn’t believe it, but there was no doubt that this was happening, no matter if I believed it or not.

Walking to his front door, I tried to take in my surroundings. Zayne’s house was surrounded by a big garden filled with a lot of plants and flowers.

Zayne arrived at the door a couple of seconds before I did, but he was having problems finding the keyhole. Was he nervous? It definitely wasn’t the alcohol affecting him; he’d been fine on the drive mere minutes ago.
