“Even if you got angry at me for something?” Cage pushed.
“That’s not how it works for us. When we saywe’re in,that’s what we mean. Now, today, is not the day for you to be worried about this.”
“That’s what my therapist said.”
“Then listen to her.” I leaned in to hug him. “We’re tackling these things one disaster at a time—deal?”
He grinned widely at me then nodded. “Deal.”
“Good,” I reached across to turn off the hazards. “Let’s go slay this dragon, then we can relax tonight and have a little fun.”
Taking him to his driving test was Jager’s idea. She felt it was something he and I could do together, to bond. It made me sad he thought we would send him back—I’d never and I knew Jager would rather die than have someone else take him.
While he was out on his test, I called Jager and told her about what we spoke about. She wanted to hold him then, but I asked her not to mention it to him.
“Let him come to you.” I told her.
She sighed. “I don’t want him to think we’ll send him back—give up on him. I know how that feels.”
“But you didn’t have us.” I tried comforting her. “He has us.”
“Thanks. Let me know what happens so I can get things in motion, okay?”
Promising her I would, I told her I loved her, and we hung up.
While I waited for my son to get back, I reclined my seat and closed my eyes. About an hour later, someone knocked on the window almost scaring me to death. When I looked up, it was Cage. He couldn’t contain his excitement as he waved the paperwork at me.
Opening the door and climbing out, he tackled me, almost taking me off my feet. Laughing, I hugged him tightly.
“I take it you passed?”
‘I did!” He grinned.
“I’m proud of you.” I told him.
Cage stood back to look up into my eyes as if he was trying to read the truth in me. When he hugged me again, I kissed the side of his head.
“Get in.” I told him. “We’ll stop for ice-cream before we go home.”
“I’m in!”
He turned to run around the car, but I stopped him. “You wanna drive to the ice-cream place?”
“I can do that now!” He danced around.
I handed him the key and hurried around to the passenger side. Before I got in, I sent Jager a text.
We paused so he could take a breath, then we slipped on our seatbelts and Cage drove us through the streets to his favourite ice-cream place close to our ranch. We bought cones for ourselves then a tub for the house.
We were heading back to the truck when Jager called my phone.
“Yeah, baby.” I answered. “Behave, you’re on speaker.”
She laughed. “The groomer called. I have to go pick up Lili and Bane. I won’t be long.”
“Okay, sweetie. I love you.”
“Love you too—is Cage okay?”
