I twisted one way, then the other to look at myself.
“You’re sure about this?” I asked Sadie.
“Of course, I’m sure.” She told me. “Now, what perfumes do you have?”
“Only body mist. Its Cherry scented.”
“That’ll work in a pinch.” Sadie replied. “Spritz some on each side of your neck and—”
An engine pulled into the yard, and I rushed to the window. Seeing Mack climb from the front seat of his truck sent my heart racing again and I felt sick.
“Breathe.” Sadie advised me. “Take a second to gather yourself.”
She hurried out to greet Mack. After I’d taken her advice, I gathered my purse, ensured I had my credit card, cell and some cash, then stopped to spritz some body mist on my neck.
Carefully, I then descended the stairs and entered the living room where Sadie was busy speaking with Mack. She stopped speaking when I entered, forcing Mack to turn and look at me.
He was beautiful in the suit he wore—it hugged his muscular frame perfectly. In that moment, all I wanted to do was lead him up stairs to my bedroom.
But this night out was a part of us courting—it was a part of us getting to know each other and it was important. His blond hair sat I large waves atop his head and his grey eyes were filled with a fire that drove me crazy.
“Wow.” He smiled. “Lady in red.”
“Do you like it?”
“Yes, but are you comfortable?” He asked, stepping closer.
I nodded. “Very.”
“Your neck is bare.”
I touched my chest and nodded. “I never really focused on jewelry. I’m sorry.”
“Don’t be.” He told me while reaching into the inner breast pocket of his blazer.
He pulled out a long, red velvet box and held it out to me.
“What’s this?” I asked.
“Open it.”
My hands shook as I did as he asked. Inside was a beautiful white gold necklace with a green stone that was shaped as a teardrop. I wasn’t big on jewels—I had no idea what it was.
“It’s jade.” Mack pointed out. “Can I put it on you?”
Tears welled up in my eyes. It was the first time anyone had given me something so beautiful.
“This is for me?” I asked.
“It’s for you. Can I put it on you?”
“Um—sure.”
I turned and waited until he placed the chain around my neck. The pendant sat in the center of my chest and when he kissed my shoulder, I grinned and turned to face him.
“It’s beautiful.” I told him. “Thank you.”
“We should go.” He leaned in to press his lips to my right temple.
