“Then let’s get you back then,” Hermes told me.
We threw around ideas. All of them having Cage remaining behind with Tiana to watch over him. While I wasn’t too keen on her staying by herself, Hermes told me she was capable of taking out anyone who tried getting into the house.
All the plans had to do with Swede.
I felt horrible about the way our last conversation ended. When I was alone with Hermes, I sighed.
“What’s up?”
“I all but accused Swede of being a mole.” I admitted.
“You did what?” Hermes asked.
“I was angry.” I told him. “There’s a mole in the DOD and we were just attacked—”
“Jager, you and I both know Swede would never—”
“I know.” I dragged a hand over my braids. “I know.”
“Call him.” Hermes told me.
Sighing, I did just that.
When Swede picked up, he didn’t sound like his usual self. He was sullen and angry, and I couldn’t blame him.
“Listen, I’m sorry.” I managed after clearing my throat. “I was disrespectful, and I never mean to do that. It won’t happen again.”
“You promise?”
I hung my head. “Promise.”
“Just know, this group—y’all are my family.” Swede’s voice cracked with emotions. “I protect you with my life. I just wish you’ll always remember that.”
“I won’t forget again.”
Swede nodded. “Has Hermes and Tiana arrived?”
Instead of speaking, I turned the camera so he could see them. After they greeted each other, I got Mack and we finalized the plan. Hermes would go out and look around the town we were in, press his ear to the ground and see if he could hear anything. Since no one knew him, it shouldn’t be dangerous for him.
Once he returned, we would go through what he found out with what Swede had and decide on next steps. In the meantime, Mack and I would wander around the motel to keep an eye on the area. Tianna would remain behind to keep an eye on Cage.
After a few minutes, I watched as Tianna kissed Hermes at the door.
“You be careful.” Tianna told him. “Don’t talk to strangers.”
“Unless they’re cute or have candy.” Hermes grinned at her.
Tianna shook her head, kissed him again and smoothed her hands down his muscular arms. “I love you.”
The smile that broke across Hermes’ face made me blush and look away.
“I love you too.” He told her.
I left the room to use the bathroom and when I returned, Mack and Tianna were speaking with Cage who seemed interested in every word she had to say. I caught their attention to let them know I’ll take first round outside, ensured I had a functioning gun and headed for the door.
“Hey.” Mack called. “Wait a minute.”
Turning with my hand on the knob, I faced him.
