It felt like an eternity that we sat there nothing but silence. But that was all she wanted from me. Eventually, I had to climb out of the bed to use the bathroom, using pieces of furniture to make my way into the room. At one point I almost fell over—she jerked to her feet but seemed to stop herself.
I could see it in her eyes she wanted to help, but I shook my head at her, and she nodded.
When I returned, she was on the phone by the window.
“What we talkin’ ‘bout here?” She was asking. “Then what are we supposed to do? You said this mission was secured and now you’re telling me there’s a mole somewhere? No! Swede, no! You listen. Find the fucking leak and plug it! You hear me?”
She hung up and turned and whipped the phone across the room. Luckily, it came in my direction, and I reached up and caught it.
“We’re gonna need this.” I told her. “What’s going on?”
“Someone at the DOD screwed me.” She growled. “They don’t know where we are right now, so we’re safe here for a while longer. Thankfully, our boys didn’t tell their contact at the DOD where we are. That information is safe, but I don’t want to push it.”
“So, that’s why we had people coming at us at Miriam’s village.”
She nodded. “I think so.”
“Is it okay to say that the people after Cage are Americans?” I asked.
Jager looked at me then dragged a hand over her face. “This is quickly becoming a bottleneck.”
“I need to get this leg back into gear.” I muttered.
“Like I said, we’re fine here for now.” She reminded me.
“I feel useless.”
Jager walked over to me and drew me into her arms. “Give yourself a break.” She told me. “This leg doesn’t dictate who you are. Now, we’re fine for now. If your leg isn’t well by the time we wake up tomorrow, we’ll come up with a different plan.”
She stepped back and pointed to the bed. “Get in. We’ll elevate it.”
Sighing, I allowed her to help me back into bed as she set pillows underneath my leg.
“How in the world can you be this woman and not expect me to want to kiss you?” I asked.
“A kiss means so much.” Jager replied. “I always thought when a man kissed me it’s because I’m his. I’m not trying to get you to commit to something or to want something else. That’s just how I feel.”
“Was my kiss your first?”
“No. I wasn’t saving myself or anything like that.” She informed me. “It’s—kisses are intimate.”
I sighed and allowed the bed to take my full weight. Sighing, I closed my eyes. “What I do want to be intimate with you?”
Jager said nothing and for a moment, I thought she’d left. Holding my breath, I rolled my head to the side and opened my eyes to see she was still standing there.
“I never want to lie to you.” I told her. “That’s not the best foundation for anything.”
“I don’t know how—”
“Don’t think too hard about it.” I told her. “This isn’t one of those things that you need to agonize over. It was in my head. I just wanted you to know what I was thinking. Okay?”
“Okay.”
“Smile for me, Huntress.”
She shook her head but smiled which made me happier than it probably should.
All three ofus had dinner sitting on my bed. The mood in the room was something I’d always craved. My family, growing up, was never like this. We’d tried having a family dinner once when I was ten. It didn’t end well. My father got drunk before coming home. When he walked through the door, he was like a simmering volcano.
