The tires screeched.
“Get down!” Jager screamed. “Cage, keep your head down!”
I ploughed through the men who decided to get in the way and continued out of the parking lot and toward the roadway.
The sun was on the other side of the sky by the time I exhaled and slowed down. It was evident we needed to change whatever plans we had. Jager had climbed through the seats to sit in the back with Cage who cuddled into her side and fell asleep after crying.
Seeing that angered me—he didn’t deserve to be going through any of this. He just a kid.
When we arrived at the motel Swede found us, it wasn’t much of anything.
The hallways smelled like turpentine and bullshit. When we got into the room, it had one bed in the back, the bathroom was falling a part and the walls looked as if they hadn’t been cleaned since Noah built the large boat.
After we fed Cage and he showered, we tried getting him to sleep on the bed, but he didn’t want to be alone. He curled up on the sofa and I watched as Jager drew her coat over him. After he fell asleep, her and I ate while discussing what was happening.
The truth was, if we didn’t have Cage with us, we would have taken the fight to the bastards and end this. But we couldn’t do that because Cage could get hurt.
“We’re going to need some help.” Jager told me. “We can’t keep Cage safe and end this at the same time. “
“Who do you suggest?” I asked.
“Hang on a second.” She pulled out her phone and dialed.
I glanced over at Cage who was tossing about on the sofa, the coat that we’d placed over him was on the floor.
“Hermes.”
Jager’s voice brought my attention back to her.
“You got a second—can you talk?” She asked. “Cool, I’m going to hang up and video call you.”
After a few seconds, she did what she said she would and I leaned forward to watch the screen. A man’s face appeared, and he arched a brow when he saw me.
“Jager? What’s going on?” He asked.
“Um, Maksim Demidov, meet Mack Salazaar.” Jager introduced us.
Maksim tipped his chin up at me in greeting but I merely stared at him, wondering what his relationship was with Jager.
“I have a situation and I need some help.” She told him. “I know you might be busy, but—”
“Come now, beautiful.” His voice was soft, like a growl. “You know I always have time for you.”
“How quickly can you get to Algeria?”
“Algeria?” Maksim leaned closer. “What are you doing in Algeria?”
“Long story.” She responded. “The Brotherhood sent me here to help someone out. We’re stuck here and the noose is tightening. We were trying to run for the border to get back to Casablanca, but—there are moles and we’re having a helluva time.”
“Say no more.” Maksim told her. “We’re in Palma right now.”
“You and Tiana?”
Maksim smirked. “Of course.”
“Oh, Jesus, Hermes.” Jager sighed. “I’m so sorry.”
“Don’t be.” He replied. “She will understand. You need help—we’re comin’.”
