I smiled and killed the call. The wait for the location didn’t take long. I rode toward it but stopped a little distance away to watch the place. The helmet beeped and I pressed a button on the left side.
“Where are you?” Lizard asked.
I craned my neck to notice the jeep.
“Keep coming.” I told him. “Straight ahead.”
When he was close by, I waved.
The jeep pulled to a stop beside me, and Black Widow wound the window down.
“We can’t miss it.” Black Widow said.
“What gave it away?” Lizard asked. “The barbed wire?”
I chuckled. “Think we can get a closer look before we head back?”
Lizard and Black Widow nodded.
While Black Widow found a place to park, I rolled the cycle after them and slid the cycle in beside the jeep. We wandered back on foot, found a place to hide and looked over the property.
There were cameras on the outside of the building—we could have Tex take care of those when we went back to grab Striker. The thing was, we needed to ensure he was on the property.
It would be useless to raid with him somewhere else. Then we’d lose him again and with my current mood, I would light the damn country on fire.
Chapter 14
Jesse
Being alone with Paul was strange. Though we spent most of our childhood together, it was almost as if I needed to get to home him all over again. The silence was enough to drive me crazy and every time Paul entered the space I was in, my heart grew heavy with anger and guilt and confusion.
The entire world was sitting on my shoulders. I could feel the knots and they’d gotten so bad, each time something else stressed me out, all I felt was pain.
For a moment, I excused myself and closed the door. I gripped the vanity, closed my eyes, and rolled my shoulders, trying desperately to work some of the kinks out. But the more I rolled them, the worse they became.
Turning on the cold water, I cupped my hands under the downpour, waited for a moment then dumped the water out. I patted my cheeks then rubbed my shoulders to alleviate some of the stress.
After another tap of my cheeks with the cold water, I dried them with a clean towel then made my way back out.
Paul was sitting in the living room digging through the papers we’d been using for the mission and said nothing when I walked by.
To hide away, I made enough food for Paul and I plus left some for the others. It was the one thing I could do so my brain wouldn’t explode with worry. I wasn’t sure why I worried so much about Frost being out there. She had proven for years she could take care of herself. She’d survived without me all her life—she didn’t need me for this.
But I couldn’t seem to help myself.
What was wrong with me?
This woman was dangerous.
“Are you going to ignore me all day?” Paul asked.
My back instantly went up.
“I’m not ignoring you.” I set a plate on the table and reached for utensils. “I just don’t know what to say to you right now. Plus my girl could be in trouble.”
“Forget the food for a second.” Paul took the second plate from my hands and set it on the counter. “We have a way to go with this relationship. But what I told you about your father, I told you because I don’t want to hide anything from you anymore. I don’t think it’s the best foundation to start a relationship on, was I wrong?”
I shook my head. “Secrets are never a good foundation to start anything on. But right now, I have a lot on my shoulders. I can’t focus on who I am, who my father is because—”
