She shrugged. “I don’t care. We’ll make it work no matter what.”

My heart warmed, and when I was quiet for a bit too long, Miles said, “We’re just figuring things out now, so what day works best for you guys? It’ll be a really small group.”

She made a face. “Hm. Would it be weird to do it on Friday night?”

Miles offered a shrug. “We can make that work.”

They talked it over, and all I could do was sit there in wonder at my boyfriend. Gah, my boyfriend. I was so happy he’d finally agreed to use that label.

He always acted like I was almost… doing him a favor by being around him and supporting him, but didn’t he understand how much he was supporting me too?

After we chatted for another hour—I absolutely didn’t expect to be here this long—we finally got up to leave.

Maggie came in for a hug, and we held each other for a long time.

When she finally let go, I asked quietly, “You’re really coming next weekend?”

Her gaze softened. “Yes. I promise.”

I sucked in a breath and nodded before Mags moved over to Miles.

Before I could stop her, she pulled him into a hug. He was tense and clearly uncomfortable, but he hugged her back, and then she left with a wave.

Miles turned to me. “Are you okay, sweet cheeks?”

I grinned at the nickname. “Yeah, honeybuns, I’m okay.”

He rolled his eyes, then grabbed my hand and cleared his throat. “Um, she, uh… she really loves you and is really sorry shedidn’t contact you sooner. She’s missed you and regrets taking your parents’ side when everything went down.”

I blinked at him, and my eyes widened in surprise. “You read her?”

“I… kinda didn’t have a choice. I’m really sorry.” He looked upset, like he was worried I’d be mad.

“Hey, it’s okay. I’m not upset at all. Promise, lovey.”

“You sure? I really didn’t do it on purpose.”

“Of course I’m sure, and I know you didn’t. It’s actually really nice to hear that since I know she couldn’t have faked it.”

He blew out a breath in relief. “I… almost didn’t tell you because people always get mad when I do that, but I didn’t want to keep it from you.”

I cupped his cheek. “I’m glad you told me. I never want you to feel like you have to hide anything from me. Don’t hide yourself, okay? Please.”

He blew out a breath and gave me a nod with a shy smile. “I’ll try.”

I pressed a kiss to his lips, then took his hand and led him out of the cafe, more than ready to go home—to his home—and relax on the couch with my boyfriend cuddled into my side.

Chapter Twelve

Miles

Spending the weekend with Winter had been exactly what I’d needed to recharge for another work week. Since he started working with me, we’d been getting things finished so much quicker, which meant we could do more jobs in one day, andI was able to take off on the weekends.

Where I used to work Mondays through Saturdays—and even some Sundays—I now had a strict no weekends rule, unless it was a true emergency. I loved it because Win spent every weekend with me.

Meeting his sister with him had been a lot, but Win seemed to feel lighter since then. Like he’d been carrying a heavy boulder on his shoulders for the last thirteen years, and Magnolia had swooped in and pulled it off of him.

I was grateful she’d reached out. And even though I knew other emotions were going to come out of this whole thing once Win really processed it, I was sure it would be a good thing in the long run.
