The frown on her face that always appears when she sees Ethan is enough to know what she’s thinking. Then she amplifies her reaction when she looks away in disdain, even though I’m sitting here too and we’re at peace.

Ethan chuckles and bites the inside of his lip when I turn back to face him.

“You know if you’re going to stare at her ass you have to be ready to confess you were looking,” I point out.

“Just because she has a great ass doesn’t mean I’m ready to own it.”

“Own it?” This is interesting. He’s never talked like that about Bree before.“You’re awareshe kind of hates you, right?”

“She should. Nice girls like that should stay far away from bad guys like me.”

“You’re a cop.”

“Not when it comes to her.”

Ethan took the title of high school bully in senior year hands down when he filled Bree’s car with fish that had been dead for weeks. It was like he had them brewing for her. Then when he registered her number as a phone sex hotline that ruined any semblance of friendship the two might have forever.

Butlike most, Iknow all the reasons why guys give certain girls a hard time in school, and since we aren’t in high school anymore, I turn back around and wave Bree over.

“What are you doing?” Ethan asks under his breath, but I ignore him.

I continue waving at Bree even though she’s trying to politely decline by pointing to her watch.I pretend I don’t know what she means, so after a few moments, she makes her way over.

“Bree Dawson,” I beam as she approaches me.“How dare you come in here and not say hi to me?”

“I could see you were busy. Hello Logan,” she says coolly then spears a glance at Ethan.“Detective Carson.”

“Yes Ma’am,” Ethan replies.

“I’m not busy. Ethan and I were just telling Die Hard and Rambo jokes. What are you up to?”

“Grabbing burgers for me and Quinn.”

Good, she can feed my girl and make sure that body of hers continues to look the way it does.

“Didn’t figure you for a burger person,” Ethan mutters, and Bree cuts him a sharp glance.

“I’m surprised you even think of me at all. That big head of yours seems to have so much in it as it is.”

Ethan chuckles and taps his head.“Big head means there’s always room inside for more.

I watch the dynamic between them. They’re rarely ever together, but when it happens this same thing occurs.

She avoids eye contact, and he gives her a lingering stare. When she does look at him, there’s a spark and I think she doesn’t know what to do about it.They’ve been like this for the last fifteen years.

“Must be for all those crazy plans of yours.” The spark comes into her eyes now.

“Come on, there’s no way you’re still talking about high school,” Ethan counters.

“I’m sorry, am I supposed to forget the prick who put so much dead fish in my car I had to get rid of it?Or the creeps who kept calling me because they thought I was a hooker called Muffin?”

Ethan bites the inside of his lip to stop himself from laughing but it barely works.

I just about manage to contain myself because I need Bree on my side when it comes to Quinn. And, even though I might have been in the company of the bullies, I genuinely like her and wouldn’t allow anything to happen to her.

“It’s not funny, if you weren’t a cop I’d slap you.”

Ethan laughs and looks her up and down, slow and purposefully, to which Bree responds with an indignant glare.
