“No, you couldn’t. The captain was very specific about that.”
“Yes, and they specifically want me.”
“They do, and it’s avery good thing.Logan, it’s a foot in the door to bigger things.I wouldn’t be a friend to you if I didn’t point that out.I also wouldn’t be a friend if I didn’t understand the reasons for your need to think about taking the job.”
“I’m… gonna take it, Ethan.”
“Yeah?”
“Yes. I don’t think it would be wise to screw myself out of an opportunity like that.”
“No, and not when they’re talking about more work.Who knows what could happen after.This one guy I knew who got a similar job now works as a consultant for the C.I.A and military intelligence.”
That’s exactly where I’m heading in accepting this job.If I can’t be out on the battlefield, it would be great to work behind the scenes, but with my own company.
“I want that for myself.”
“You should have the chance for it.It’s very early days for you and Quinn, but I’m guessing the possibility of her staying here in Wilmington hasn’t been discussed.”
“God no.” I chuckle even though it’s not funny.“That’s not up for discussion.We went into this relationship knowing she was going to New York at the end of her stay here.That was clear from the first day.”
I’d be a bastard if I didn’t admit that deep down I’m hoping she sees what we could have and want it as much as me, but it’s not fair for me to want to mess with her plans.The same as it’s not fair to me to mess with mine.
There was a time when I would have followed Quinn anywhere and I was still keeping those options of mine open to do just that if things worked out between us.But, I can’t do that this time so the ball is back in her court.
In the end, it will be a question of what she loves more.
If it’s not me, then I have to accept that.
“We also went into this relationship knowing it was going to end in four months,” I state, unable to keep the slight quiver out of my voice.“I just hoped for more. But, like you said, it’s very early days.One step at a time right?”
“One step at a time, my friend.”
“I just don’t think I should pass on an opportunity that could take me to the next level.” Not when I’ve already put my heart at risk.
“No.”
“So, I guess I’ll cross that bridge when Quinn and I get there.”
“Yes, and I hope I didn’t put a damper on the positive in you getting back together with her.I just thought you might want to talk about it.”
“I did.”
“Cool. Well, here’s to your next level badass job Rambo,” he chuckles and raises his glass.
I raise mine too. “Thank you, Bruce/Dirty Harry.”
“We should go out and celebrate properly.This job is really good news, Logan.”
I know it is, no matter what it means in regard to me and Quinn.“Thanks, we should definitely do that.”
He sets his glass down and something catches his attention ahead of us.When I turn I see the something he’s looking at is a someone.
Bree Dawson just walked into the diner with a bright smile on her face that brightens when she approaches the waitress who seems to know her.I can just about make out that they’re talking about hair.
As Bree stops in front of the waitress and continues her chatter, I don’t miss the way Ethan’s gaze drops to her ass in her tight jeans.
He takes another swig of his drink and continues staring.Bree must feel his eyes on her because she looks directly at him when the waitress leaves her at the counter.
