I bobbed my head. He gave me some of his pasta, and I gave him some of my pizza. Once we exchanged the food, we bowed our heads, and he said grace. After that, we dug into the food. The pasta and pizza were so good. I had never tried it together, but they hit all types of spots I didn’t know I had.
“This food is so good!” I moaned.
He chuckled. “Nah, you’re just greedy.”
I glared at him before I stuck my tongue out at him. He shook his head at me and resumed eating his food.
After we were done, he paid for our meal, and we left the restaurant. I was so full that I no longer wanted to do anything.
“What do you say we raincheck Dave & Busters and let’s just chill with Skylar and Denver?” I suggested when we got back in the car.
“I’m cool with that. The food got to you, huh?”
I chuckled. “You already know it did.”
He laughed. “Yeah, I’m stuffed too. I had to be like you and ate pizza along with the pasta. We went in with the food.”
“We did, and it was good too.”
He patted my thigh. “Good. I gotta make sure my babies are good. Now that you’re full and satisfied... Wait. Are you satisfied?”
I tilted my head and glowered at him. “What do you think?”
He shrugged with a laugh. “I gotta make sure.”
I only shook my head at him.
On the drive to Skylar’s, we made small talk. I wanted to tell Melijah about my friends not reaching out to me and how it made me feel. It still hurt me that they weren’t willing to apologize to me for what they said about Melijah. They werewilling to throw our friendship away instead of apologizing to me and my man. I knew I had made the right decision when I sided with Melijah. He meant the world to me, and I loved him deeply.
He pulled into Skylar’s driveway and turned the car off. Two other vehicles were in the yard besides Skylar’s. Although my cousin and I spoke on the phone frequently, it had been a while since I had visited her house. Melijah got out of the car and came around to help me out.
“We won’t stay too long. I just need to kick the breeze with the homies for a while. I told them you were on vacation, and this week was all about you.”
I beamed happily. “It’s all good. Maybe your friends will be better than mine.”
Melijah only stared at me, not laughing. “If they aren’t, I’ll beat their asses on sight. They better not come at you wrong. I promise you it will be the last day they’ll ever do some shit like that.”
I pressed my lips together and only shook my head. When he became overprotective, he took things to levels I had never known, so it was best I chilled the hell out.
“Forget I even said anything.”
“Yeah...”
We walked to the porch in silence, and Melijah assisted me up the steps. I didn’t need his help, but he always wanted to be careful. He knocked on the door before he twisted the knob.
I frowned. “You can’t just walk into people’s houses.”
Melijah stared at me over his shoulder. “This is family. I do this all the time. They’d do the same to me. Wassup, y’all?”
He went around the room and dapped Denver up along with another man. He left me to close the door. Once I did, I scanned the place, wondering where Skylar was.
“Denver? Where is Skylar?”
He pointed to the wall with his thumb, indicating she was in the bedroom. I made my way to the door and knocked on it.
“It’s open!” she yelled back.
I let myself into her bedroom, seeing her stretched out on the bed with her phone in her hand.
