“Yeah, but this time, let’s do it right. Let’s get to know each other a little better before we get to that point. When you’re better, let’s go on a date.”

I beamed happily. If someone had told me this would be happening to me six months ago, I would have laughed in their face.

“Do you have anything in mind?”

“Nah, but when I do, I’ll let you know.”

He turned me on my side and spooned with me with his arm thrown over my waist. It was comfortable. I’d be asleep soon enough.

I yawned. “Don’t worry. I’ll hold you to it.”

My eyes fluttered closed, and sleep claimed me fast with Melijah holding me.

Three MonthsPregnant

I was at work with Jada and Camila, waiting for Mr. Davies to show up. We were in the conference room with refreshments on the table and our notes. Finally, we were able to persuade him to let us represent him. It didn’t come easily, but I was happy to have him as a client. He was on the charity board with my parents, so I hoped that had something to do with him changing his mind.

“Why does this man have to always be late?” Camila hissed, rubbing a hand across her forehead.

I shrugged. “I don’t know, but I’m sick of it. It’s like he’s not considerate of other people’s time.”

I didn’t have too much planned today since I was caught up with my paperwork. I wasn’t due back in court until the end of the week either. That blessing came right on time. I also didn’t have to worry about any doctor appointments until next month. I was officially three months pregnant, and the nausea eased up, but now all I did was sleep and eat a lot. Melijah was no better since that was all he did too. Then, when I wanted to sleep all day, he’d tell me I slept too much. Both of us did truthfully. We grew closer after he came to my house and took care of me. I looked forward to talking to him every day before and after work. We’d text sometimes throughout the day, but it was nothing like hearing his voice on the other end of the phone. That got me through the day.

He also made sure I ate every day. He still sent me money every day, regardless of the circumstances. I started saving some of that money to put toward things for the baby when I found out what I’d be having. We couldn’t wait to find out.

“I have an appointment with a client in an hour if he doesn’t hurry.” Jada huffed.

I shook my head. “I could be reading a book and eating a pickle right about now.”

Melijah couldn’t wait to tell me I told you so. My friends knew I still talked to him, and although they had something to say about it, I didn’t care. I couldn’t be miserable with my life because they didn’t like the people I wanted to hang out with. Sometimes, they felt a certain way when I hung out with Skylar.

Suddenly, the door of the conference room opened, and Mr. Davies stepped in. From the look on his face, I had a feeling we weren’t going to like what he had to say. My mouth went dry as fear clogged my throat. He came and took a seat in front of us.

“Good morning, ladies,” he greeted.

“Mornin’,” we replied.

He dropped his head to his chest. “This isn’t an easy thing to say,” he started.

I pressed my lips together, preparing myself for what he was about to say. I had a feeling I wouldn’t like it. Just when I thought we had a big case in the bag, he was about to let us go.

“I’ve decided to get represented by another law firm,” he finished.

I dropped my head as dread settled in my chest. Losing a client like this was a downer, especially to another law firm. That was something that didn’t happen often, but when it did, it left me feeling sad. It made me feel like I could’ve pushed harder, but since the beginning, this man didn’t want us to represent him because we were women.

Jada was the first to stand up. “Thanks for your time, Mr. Davies.”

He stood up to shake her hand as well. Camila followed, and I was the last to get up. I didn’t want to feel nice about it. I was pissed off, truthfully.

Once he left, we stared at each other before we flopped back in our chairs in disappointment.

“Damn! What are we going to do now?” Jada asked.

I shrugged. “I have no idea, but I’m sure we’ll get another big client.” I stood up and gathered my notepad and pen. “We’ll talk.”

Since I had nothing to do until later this afternoon, I’d chill in my office. With my tail tucked between my legs, I left the conference room. I was in disbelief at what happened. Even though Mr. Davies gave signs from the beginning, it still felt like a low blow. I felt like the universe wasn’t on my side. For what reason? I didn’t know.

I went through the morning feeling sorry for myself. I tried not to reach out to Melijah, letting him know I needed him. He had always been there whenever I needed him. I just didn’t want to be a bother, especially if he was busy at work. I sat at my desk with a bottle of water and two pickle spears when my cell phone rang on my desk. I glanced down, seeing Melijah’s number on the screen. With a smile, I answered it, putting the phone to my ear.
