Melijah shook his head. “Yeah, man. This is no walk in the park. When will the sickness stop?” He asked all the questions I wanted to ask.
“Sometimes, mommies experience morning sickness for their whole pregnancy,” she explained.
My eyes widened as I gawked at her as if she had said something foreign. There was no way I’d be able to go through morning sickness throughout my whole pregnancy, or I’d be no good by the time it was time to deliver the baby. Was that even good for the baby for me to be sick like this?
“Oh, hell nah. That’s a damn lie,” Melijah blurted out. “Will that harm the baby in her stomach? With her throwing up and not being able to keep anything down, she doesn’t have an appetite.”
I almost smiled the way he took it upon himself to ask about me too. Since we’d met up, I kept my word about reaching out to him, and he’d reach out to me and ask how I was doing. Once Ilet him know, he’d want to come and take care of me. I’d always lie and say, I’d be alright when I really wanted to tell him to come.
“Is there anything I can do to keep the nausea away? I’m sick for most of the morning and half of the afternoon. It’s hard to function when I’m going to the bathroom every five seconds,” I interjected. I blew air out of my mouth and ran a hand down my face. This frustrated the hell out of me.
“Yes, I’ll make sure you get a prescription for the way you’re feeling,” the nurse stated.
“Is that a guarantee it will help her?” Melijah asked.
She smiled with a nod. “Yes. It all depends on how she adjusts to the pills.”
He nodded. “Cool. As long as she’s good, I’ll take the way I’m feeling.”
That warmed my heart. At least Melijah cared about the way I felt too. Both of us suffered, but now I’m getting the pills I need to help me. There had to be a way to help him, too.
“After we give you an exam, we’ll be doing an ultrasound to see how far along you are.”
I nodded, growing nervous about doing an ultrasound. It became too real to know that a baby was growing inside of me. I gave him or her life. This realization brought tears to my eyes.
A doctor came in and smiled at me. She explained to me what would take place. They’d be checking my vagina as part of the exam. Melijah stood up when they took out the equipment.
“I’ll step outside while they check you down there, and I’ll be back when they’re done with that part of the exam.” He excused himself and left the room.
I didn’t know why, but I wanted him to be in here experiencing this with me. However, I knew seeing me like that probably wouldn’t be a turn on, especially when they had tocheck out my vagina. That was something I didn’t want him to see, but he could be there for everything else.
It didn’t take them long to do the exam. Once they were done, they left the room for me to redress. I rushed to put my clothes back on. Melijah stepped back in, and our gazes collided.
“Are you good?”
I nodded once. “They are getting the ultrasound room ready. What do you think will happen?”
Melijah hunched his shoulders as he reclaimed his seat. “What normally happens in ultrasound rooms?”
I frowned because how the hell was I to know? Nobody I knew was pregnant or had ever been pregnant, so this was brand new to me.
“I’ve no clue, so I guess we’ll find out together.”
“True,” he muttered.
A slight knock came at the door, and the nurse stuck her head in. “We’re ready for you.”
Melijah helped me down from the examination table. He held the door open for me as we strolled out of the room. We walked to the ultrasound room in silence. When we arrived, it was dark, with the ultrasound machine already in place and the technician waiting with a smile on her face. I smiled, greeting her.
“Okay, mom-to-be, I want you to lie on the bed and lift your shirt for me.”
Once I did as instructed, I glanced at the screen, waiting to see something on it.
She picked up a bottle and held it out. “This will be a little warm since it has been on the machine all morning.”
I nodded. “It’s all good.”
I waited patiently for her to do her thing. When she did, she picked up the probe that was attached to the machine. Sheplaced the stick on my stomach and rolled it around. Soon, a soft thump rang out in the room.
