“Dr. Pepper.”
He screwed his face up before he nodded. When he got back to the table, I would ask him about the frown he had on his face. He’d better not have a problem with my favorite drink. While I waited for him to come back, I glanced around the place. It wasn’t overly crowded, but people came and went. I pulled my cell phone out of my purse to see a text from Camila.
Mila:
Where did you go to eat?
Me:
The Subs Inn. Why?
While I waited for her to text back, I opened Candy Crush Soda. I was on level 503. Since I started playing, I had become addicted to it. Melijah downloaded it on his phone as well since I had told him about it. I needed to see how far he had gotten.
My phone dinged in my hand, and I eyed the notification.
Mila:
Bring me back a ham sub with extra mayo.
Me:
Gotcha.
Melijah came back to the table with our drinks just as our ticket number was called. He set the drinks down and went to get the subs. My mouth watered for a sip of the Dr. Pepper. It had been a while since I’d had any. Since I had been pregnant, I’ve tried to limit my soda intake and instead drink more water. That had been hard to do, especially when I loved soda so much.
Melijah came back to the table and set the tray down in front of me. While he took the subs off the tray, I reached inside my purse for my hand sanitizer. Once I had cleaned my hands, I gave him the small tube so he could do the same.
I waited until he was done, and I blessed the food. It didn’t take long to unwrap the sub, and I was happy to see they had cut it into four small sandwiches.
We ate in silence for a while, and I welcomed it. Being in Melijah’s presence was enough for me. I felt at peace whenever I was with him. Calmness always embraced me, making me feel secure. It felt like I was meant to be here with him like this. Who knew what the future held for us, but right now, I loved this.
“Damn, you were hungry. You demolished that sub,” he joked, taking a bite out of his sandwich.
I glanced down at my food, and my eyes widened. There was only one more small sub on the wrapper. I reached for a napkin to wipe my mouth. “I guess I am. The baby has me eating a lot more now. I only experience morning sickness occasionally now, so I want to eat as much as I can while I can.”
He nodded. “I understand. I’m not mad at it. What do you think we’re having?”
That was something I hadn’t thought about. “I’m not sure, but I want a boy.”
The reason was that there were too many girls in my family. We needed some boys around. It made me wonder what Melijah wanted me to have.
“Yeah, me too. It’ll be good to have a lil’ man running around. If we end up with a girl, I’ll be too overprotective.”
I rolled my eyes skyward and reached for my drink. “Of course.”
He chuckled, and we continued to eat in silence. While I ate, my mind went back to this morning. Mr. Davies really dropped us and went to another law firm. It was unbelievable. I hoped it didn’t get out to my parents that I had lost an important client. That would have them fussing at me. It wasn’t my fault since that man acted like he was too good for my friends and me.
I sighed in disbelief and shook my head. It was best not to think about my failure. If I did, it would put me in a bad mood. Since I had to go back to work, it was best I get a handle on my feelings.
“What’s wrong?” Melijah asked.
“I lost a very important client.”
“Sometimes that’s for the best. You never know what would’ve happened if you had taken on that client. He probably did y’all a favor,” he stated.
I didn’t think about it that way. The only thing I was worried about was the money we’d be losing — the chance to further our business. If we got one important client, more would come. I knew in my heart something better would come along. The only thing I could do was pray about it.
“Everything happens for a reason,” he continued. “I know nothing about what you do but take it from me. It’s not worth you stressing over. Something else will come up.”
