“I’ll wait for you at the table,” he told her.
I didn’t waste a second. I stood in front of her and took her by the waist to pull her close to me. Her body fit perfectly with mine, and having her so close had altered not only my pulse but all the blood in my body. I had never been so aware of my body’s reactions.
“Thank you for accepting the dance,” I whispered in her ear, getting so close that I managed to brush against it. That was enough to make my erection throb forcefully. I hoped she wouldn’t notice because having her like this, I couldn’t calm down.
“Thank you for inviting me,” she said, and I could tell she was trembling.
Devon Dulcet wasn’t so immune to my charms. The tension between us was palpable.
“Who is your companion? Is he your partner?” I asked, because I wasn’t going to miss the opportunity to clarify her relationship status.
“He’s a friend,” she responded, leaving me once again intrigued, but I intended to keep pressing.
“With benefits?”
“I don’t understand,” she said, pulling back slightly to look me in the eyes.
“I mean, do you have a romantic relationship?” I clarified, though I doubted she hadn’t understood; more likely she was playing dumb to avoid answering.
“Why do you want to know?” she asked, with her typical furrowed brow.
“Let’s just say I’m interested,” I whispered in her ear again, once more brushing against her skin.
“Why are you interested?”
“Why? Why? Can’t you say anything else? Do you have to question everything I say?”
“Excuse me, but I don’t see why I have to explain things about my life to you. Would you answer these questions? I don’t think you woul…”
“I’m a widower and I’m not currently in that type of relationship,” I interrupted her, to make it clear not only that I was willing to discuss this with her, but also that I was free to seduce her, which is what I was doing at that moment.
But was she?
We fell silent, just looking at each other. I was waiting for her answer, and I suppose she was deliberating whether to respond or not.
“I’m sorry,” she said, without taking her eyes off mine.
“What are you sorry about?”
“About your wife.”
“It’s been a few years now. She passed away a few months after Aurora was born.”
“I truly am sorry for you and for Aurora. It couldn’t have been easy raising a baby alone.”
If only she knew that I had always been alone because Aurora’s mother never cared about her, but I didn’t say that.
“It’s still complicated and I suppose it will be for the rest of my life, but I have employees who help me.”
Again she fell silent. The song was about to end, and I didn’t want it to ever finish. For me, it was just her and me, nothing else existed. Her perfume was driving me crazy, feeling her body had me completely aroused, and her beauty disturbed me like no one ever had before. I felt a powerful and profound desire for Devon Dulcet.
“You didn’t answer me.”
“What?” she asked, and I don’t know if she did it to avoid answering me or because she was as disturbed as I was.
“Are you in a romantic relationship?”
Come on, Devon, answer me, I said to myself.
