“Yeah, sure.” Though she wasn’t sure sitting on a sofa next to him was the best thing to do. She might end up in his lap if she wasn’t careful.
They laid out the food and dug in.
“How’s your brother?”
“He’s fine. Told me that the guest house is finished. A year earlier than he’d planned since I’m moving there now. So once I get there, I can move right in, and I won’t have to live with him.”
“Well, that’ll be nice. To have your own space.”
She flipped the fork over and licked icing off the tines. “Trust me, I’m reaping the benefits but so is he.”
Megan turned her head to find Aidan staring at her mouth, the blue in his eyes darkened to an almost navy color. The air around them thickened, reminding her of the night by the lake and how he’d looked at her the same way. Her heart beat so loud in her ears, he had to hear it. She licked her lips but couldn’t move anything else.
Aidan blinked then cleared his throat, looking down at his food. “I can’t blame the guy. I love my sisters, but there’s no way in hell I’d live with themandwork with them.”
“Right.” She swallowed hard and tried to keep from fanning herself. When had it become so hot in his office? She set down her fork and wiped her fingers with a napkin, trying to think of anything other than wanting to rip off her clothes and beg him to bring her to release.
“Oh! I wanted to show you something.” She leaned down to dig through her purse for her phone. Yep, show him pictures of pumpkins. There wasn’t anything sexy about pumpkins.
Except that pumpkin pie normally had whipped cream on it, which she’d be happy to lick off Aidan’s abs.
Get it together, Gentry.
She took a breath before sitting up. “I wanted to show you what I came across on my walk to work yesterday.” She tapped the screen a couple of times and smiled when she found the pumpkin arrangement outside the general store. She held it up for him with a grin. “Is that not the cutest thing?”
Aidan leaned back, looking at the screen, and lifted his hand. When their fingers brushed, a jolt of electricity shot up her arm. If a mere touch like that lit her up, what would it be like to have those large hands on her body?
He grinned, looking at the picture, and she swore her panties spontaneously combusted in her jeans. “It appears superheroes are the theme this year.” He narrowed his eyes and tilted his head. “That’s a damn good rendition of the Hulk. For a pumpkin.”
She nodded and shifted closer to him so she could see the screen as well, ignoring the cheers in her pants when she caught a whiff of the cologne that was quickly becoming her kryptonite. “Right? I thought the same thing.
His laugh was low and deep, dancing along her skin. “Looks like the Hanafords are starting early this year. They’ve set the tone for the competition.”
She turned to look at him. Her chest fluttered as her gaze roamed over his handsome, strong-jawed profile. She was close enough to see his long eyelashes. “Competition?”
He nodded. “Every year, there’s a pumpkin contest. The chamber of commerce sets a theme, and the shops in the square come up with a display and whoever has the best one wins.”
“Really? That’s so cute.”
“Yeah, the fall festival is the culmination of the contest. They announce the winner on the Saturday night in the middle of the square. Then they open the old courthouse for a one night only haunted house.”
“Oohh…that sounds like so much fun. When is this festival?”
“Well, today’s the sixteenth? Next weekend.”
“And it lasts all weekend?”
“Yep.” He handed back her phone. “Friday night to Sunday afternoon.”
She grinned. “I can’t wait to see more displays and take pictures. It’s going to be fun.”
“Want to go with me?”
Her finger hovered over the screen, frozen, then she looked up at him. “Go with you where?”
“To the festival. I have to work the Friday, but I can get Saturday off. We can eat some bad carnival food and play some games. Find out whose pumpkin wins. If you’d be interested in something like that.” His mouth pursed and he looked away. “That probably sounds kind of lame though. Compared to what you’re used to, rubbing elbows with Nashville’s elite.”
Her eyes widened. Was that vulnerability in confident Aidan’s eyes? “Are you asking me on a date, Aidan?”
