He rubbed the back of his neck, his lips in a firm line. “I mean…we could go as friends. Since you’re on a guy hiatus and all.”

She looked down at her cinnamon roll and fought back the disappointment that settled in her gut. She had said that, hadn’t she?Well, shit.

Lifting her gaze to his, she pasted a smile on her face and forced herself to find the good. “Of course. Absolutely, I’d love to go with you. As friends.” She poked his shoulder and leaned close, a grin on her face. “Is it like a beauty pageant with pumpkinzilla-type behavior?”

“Pumpkinzilla?”

“Yeah, you know. Where the contestants get all shrilly when they run out of spray paint or wives screaming at their husbands that he cut that slashing jack o’lantern grin too much. Things like that.”

His voice held laughter. “There has been known to be some antics that are talked about for decades at these things.”

“Oh goodie!” She clapped her hands while at the same time her head went light. It isn’t a date, Megan. It isn’t a date. Remember that.“Yes, of course. I’d love to go with you. I’ll see if I can get my shift covered that night.”

Did he even know that his smile would be the death of her? He reached up and toyed with a lock of hair, wrapping it around his finger. “Okay, that’s good.”

His eyes were on hers, then focused on her lips. “You’ve, uh, got some glaze…” His thumb grazed across her bottom lip, the dichotomy of the roughness of his skin on the soft, tender skin of her lip sending a shiver through her.

He held her chin with his thumb and forefinger, and before she could figure out what was going on, Aidan was leaning closer and her eyes were sliding closed. Thoughts of how badly she wanted him swirled through her mind, crowding out all the questions of what was going on between them.

When his lips met hers, she sighed and fell into the kiss, her fingers curling into his shirt. His mouth was firm yet gentle and coaxing, making her open for him. When she did, his tongue slid against hers in a seductive dance that made her want to climb in his lap and have him kiss more than her mouth.

He tasted sweet, like icing and cinnamon and sex. Her skin flushed at the thought of his body on hers, this incredible mouth that was winding her up making its way all over her body.

Aidan groaned when she shifted closer, his hand moving to cup the back of her neck, taking the kiss deeper. His other hand moved high up her thigh and she moaned softly, wanting that hand to keep going until it reached her center.

“Hey, Aid, I think we need to go over—Oh shit. I’m sorry.”

Megan jumped away from Aidan, who cursed under his breath. She wiped at her mouth as mortification set in. Aidan lifted his cap off his head and ran a hand through his hair before replacing it. “What’s up, Landon?” His words belied the strained tone to his voice.

A tall, handsome deputy stood in the doorway, frozen in place, and his mouth snapped open and shut several times before he spoke. “I can come back.”

What the hell was in the water around this town? So far all the law enforcement in this town looked like hot action heroes with their muscles and tactical gear.

Her cheeks burning, Megan gathered her things and stood. “No, you stay. I need to go. I’ve kept you long enough, Deputy Reynolds.”

With a heavy sigh, Aidan stood as well. He frowned, and if looks could kill, Landon would be a corpse right about then. “I’ll walk you out.”

She edged her way to the door, closer to where the deputy stood. “No, please. I can see myself out.”

When she turned, she nearly collided with Landon. “Oh, I’m sorry.”

Landon stepped aside to let her by, a smile on his face, his beautiful amber eyes dancing. “You must be Megan. I’m Landon Grey. Aidan’s cousin.”

“I’m disowning you,” Aidan said, his face foreboding and his arms crossed over his chest. “And then I’m firing you.”

That look made flop sweat break out in Megan, but Landon just laughed it off and clapped Aidan on the shoulder. “Sure, buddy.” He turned his attention back to Megan. “Are you feeling better after your accident?”

“Yes, thanks for asking. Listen, I’ve got to go run. Well, not really run. I kinda suck at running.” She bit her lip and prayed that would keep her mouth from continuing its word vomit. “Anyway, I need to go.”

She walked backward out of the door, knocking her elbow into the doorjamb. She rolled her lips inward to ward off the yelp of pain she wanted to release. As she started to turn away, Aidan’s voice stopped her.

“Hey, Megan?”

She turned back to meet his eyes, rubbing her screaming elbow. “Yeah?”

There was that smile again. The one that seemed to be just for her. The one that made her swoon. The one that confused the hell out of her.

“To be continued.”
