Whatever it took.
Without waiting for another response from Remy, Jared headed downstairs. They kept the gem in a case in the living room, next to the Blood Crystal that had protected his family for so long, even while Jared hadn't known it. Put together, it became apparent that the two gems were part of a set. Their shape and size were the same, only their coloring differed—and the fact that the Blood Crystal was giving off a faint glow while the Seeker Stone might have looked like a regular stone if one didn't know better.
Then again, Jared used to think that the Blood Crystal was just a pretty stone too, no matter what his adoptive father tried to tell him.
Taking the Seeker Stone out of the case, he weighted it in his hands. It was heavier than it looked, and warm to the touch.
Briefly, Jared considered asking the other vampires where Silas might have gone. But what if he ended up chasing down the wrong trail? What if he wasted too much time following dead ends?
Silas would get killed then, by some unknown vampire.
Jared would lose him.
It was unacceptable.
A sense of determination settled his nerves as he held the stone up to his forehead and closed his eyes. The memories you hold most dear, the letter had said. Jared brought them to the forefront of his mind. The years he'd spent with his family growing up, before they'd died in that fire. Eating ice cream out by the lake with his younger brother. Flying home-made kites with his mom. Seeing Silas again, kissing him, finally, after all these years.
Jared didn't know which memory did the trick—or if it was all of them, but the stone grew warmer in his hand, almost as if it was sucking energy straight out of him. When Jared opened his eyes again, the stone was glowing, brighter even than the Blood Crystal. A jolt went through him, then. His vision turned a blinding white.
Suddenly, Jared knew. Everything he was seeking for. He knew where to go to find out about the prophecy. And he knew where Silas was. Before his mind's eye, he saw him flying through the city, heading west.
Without another thought, Jared headed out.
He had no time to lose.
