Chapter Twenty-Five

Jared rushed to the window, but he couldn't hold on to Silas before the vampire shifted and flew away. He stared after him for a second or two, but the sun hadn't risen yet and he couldn't follow the bird’s movements for long.

Cursing under his breath, he turned back to the bed. He needed to get the dog to a vet, while he was still breathing.

Why the hell had Silas bitten him? Silaslovedthis dog, and when Jared had entered the room, the vampire had looked every bit as shocked by his own actions as Jared.

If he hadn't been, why would he have screamed? Why would he have cried?

Desperately, Jared wished he knew what was going on, but with Silas gone, he had no one to ask.

"Come on, buddy, we'll get you to a doctor." he said to the dog, focusing on the one problem he could solve right now. Carefully, he scooped Drizzit up in his arms and carried him out of the room. Before he could reach the stairs, though, he was stopped by his brother.

"What was that just now?" Remy asked. His eyes darted to the dog. "Was that Silas?"

"He didn't mean it," Jared said. He didn't know exactly what had happened, but he knew that much. "I'm taking him to a vet."

"We're going to need emergency services." That was Elena's voice. Jared glanced back at his sister. He hadn't even heard her come out of her room.

"Did Silas leave?" Remy asked, there was a hint of panicked urgency in his voice that unsettled Jared.

"I couldn't stop him."

"You have to go after him. Right now. Elena and I can take the dog to the vet." Remy didn't even wait for Jared to agree before taking the dog from him.

"I don't know where he went."

"He's going to meet another vampire," Remy said. "A female. If you don't find him..." Remy paused, as if the thing he needed to say was too terrible for him to say.

"What aren't you telling me?" Jared demanded, needing to know what his brother had seen.

"I was hoping it was just a dream."

Elena spoke up again at that. "Spit it out already."

Remy looked from her to Jared, then said, "They're going to kill him. That's what I saw." His hands balled into fists by his sides. "I'm sorry."

Remy’s words punched all the air out of Jared’s lungs. "Who?" he made himself ask, even as his whole world seemed on the verge of collapse.

"A female vampire. I don't know her. I just... It's not easy to tell with the dreams. I wish I had more information."

Jared wished that too, because he had no idea where to find Silas, or even where to look for him. “Give me the dog,” Elena cut in. “I’m taking him to the vet while you two figure this out.” Without waiting for a response, she took Drizzit from Remy and headed down the stairs. Jared stared after her only for a second before his thoughts focused on Silas again.

There was no way he could let anyone kill Silas.

Not after everything.

Not again.

“I need to find him.”

Remy eyed him critically. "Are you going to use the stone?"

The gem? Jared hadn't even thought of it, but now that his brother mentioned it...

It was capable of findinganyone, wasn't it?Everything you seek,Silas had written in his note. That was a powerful promise, even if it demanded a large sacrifice. "Can you think of anything else?" he shot back at his brother instead of saying yes or no.

If the gem was his only way of finding Silas, though, he would absolutely do it.
