A knock came at the door before Raiden entered the room.

“Hey,” he said, offering me a thin smile. He nodded to the bowl in his hand. “I, uh, made you somethin’ to eat.”

“You made it for me?”

“Well, you haven’t eaten since ya got here.” Raiden approached the bed and placed the bowl on my lap. “I don’t like when people are hungry. Demon people included.”

“Thank you.” I stared at the contents. Homemade soup with hearty chunks of chicken, noodles, carrots, and celery. The kind gesture was unexpected.

“No problem.” Raiden left the room.

“He’s such a big softie,” Bellamy said. “You need me to help feed you?”

Was he thinking of the time I helped feed him in the underworld? That felt like forever ago.

“No. I can manage on my own.”

“Suit yourself.” He returned his gaze to the window.

The soup tasted great. Not that I expected anything less. Raiden cooked amazing dishes. He loved feeding people almost as much as he loved eating. Once I’d downed as much as I could, I set the bowl on the nightstand and wiped my mouth.

Bellamy hadn’t said a word the entire time I ate.

“See anything interesting out there?”

He tore his gaze from the window, a crease in his brow. “Hmm?”

“Wow. Your mind is somewhere else, huh?”

“The sea calms me,” he said. “I used to look at it often when I was a boy.”

“What did you see when you looked at it?”

“Freedom. A chance for a different life. I got my wish when Lazarus took me in. I guess that habit stuck with me all these years. It helps me think.” Bellamy shook his head. “But anyway. You should probably get more sleep.”

“I’ve been sleeping for a whole day. That’s the last thing I want to do right now.” My body betrayed my words as I yawned.

Bellamy’s lips twitched. “I can always make you sleep.”

“Keep your freaky Nephilim powers to yourself. I’ll sleep when I want to.”

“Clara’s magic will be more efficient the more you rest.”

The mention of the witch filled me with bitterness again.

“What?” Bellamy asked. “You got a sudden murderous look in your eyes.”

“It’s nothing.”

He came over to the bed and hovered over me, hand resting on the headboard. “Tell me the truth.”

My body tingled at his proximity. Yet, another feeling was much stronger in that moment. “Have you fucked her?”

Surprise flickered across his face. “Fucked who? Clara?”

I nodded.

He laughed. Hard. “Oh my god. You’re jealous.”
