“I refuse to accept that,” Fletcher responded, stepping away from me. The stubbornness I’d come to love about him surfaced, and he clenched his jaw. “You might’ve given up, but I won’t. I will never give you up, Kellan. As long as my heart still beats and there’s breath in my lungs, I will find a way.”

“You need to rest,” I said, taking his hand and leading him back to the bed. He glared and opened his mouth to backtalk me. “No arguing, boy. Get in bed.”

With a defeated sigh, he did as I said. I crawled in beside him and fluffed his pillow before laying him back on it and tucking the blanket in around him.

“I love you,” he whispered, staring up at me between his thick, red-blonde lashes.

The words were on the tip of my tongue, but I still couldn’t voice them. Ifeltthe words in my heart, but what good would saying them do? It’d be better for him if I didn’t, so when I was gone, it’d be easier for him to move on.

I lightly kissed his lips before moving the hair from his face.

“Sleep.”
