“What’s happened?” Selena brushed a hand across her forehead.
Cali shuddered. “Someone called yesterday and told me that they changed the restaurant.”
Selena frowned. “What are you talking about?”
“Someone ran me off the road on purpose.”
Shit. Shit.Calita chest tightened as panic threatened to overtake her.
Selena reared back. “That’s…he doesn’t know you’re here.” Her best friend spoke aloud what Cali was too afraid to articulate.
She didn’t want to think about David being here. She told Selena about the call she overheard at the front desk.
“Have you told Simon?”
She clutched Selena’s arm. “I haven’t.” She swallowed. “I have to tell him now, don’t I?”
Selena stood and paced away. “I don’t keep things from my mate, Cali. Once I tell Nathan…” She sighed. “Simon is the alpha, and Nate will probably tell him you think you’re in danger. I know Nate looked into it when you got here.” She held up her hand as Calita tried to protest. “He’s in charge of keeping trouble out of this town, Cali.”
“What did he say he found?”
“He wouldn’t tell me anything, Nate’s serious about privacy.”
Calita let out a relieved breath. She couldn’t help the sting of tears. She didn’t want to relive it, but if Simon really thought she was his mate, it was best to tell him before he invested too much into her. She could never be what he needed.
Selena frowned. “I know it feels impossible, Cali, but trust Simon, it will be alright.”
Cali nodded.
“In the meantime, why don’t you come stay with Nate and me? Just on the off chance that it really is David. I don’t believe he would be so stupid, but you’ll never rest with the possibility hanging over your head.”
“Selena,” she sighed. “I can’t impose.” Simon had invited her out to his home, maybe she would take him up on the offer.
“You can’t stay here, Cali.” Her best friend insisted.
“I can go to Simon’s.”
Selena nodded, “that’s a great idea, I’ll help you pack. We can go to the sheriff’s office and then call him when you’re done.”
Selena was in full bullying mode; Cali knew telling her no would be useless. She let out a huff of breath and got up from the bed. She shuffled to her closet and threw some clothes into an overnight bag. Selena helped her down the stairs and out the door. Though the sheriff’s office was only a few doors down from the motel, they drove. Nate was sitting behind his desk, scowling at the computer. He stood when they entered.
He grabbed her other arm and helped her into the chair in front of his desk. “You want a more comfortable chair?”
Nate’s voice was quiet, firm. He had an easy way about him. He’d put her at ease within the first few minutes of meeting him when she’d first moved to town. She shook her head. He walked over to his mate and nuzzled her before going back to his seat.
His serious gaze studied Calita as he settled into his chair. “How are you feeling?”
She shrugged, “I imagine I look exactly how I feel.”
His lips quirked up.
“You hear anything else about my accident?”
“Nothing has happened since I talked to you yesterday.”
She cleared her throat and shored up her courage. “That’s not the only reason I came. I wanted to know about David. To see if you could look into finding him.”
He stared a moment before he turned around and pulled a file from the cabinet. He opened it on his desk and typed a couple of things into his computer. “He’s still in prison.”
