“Is that a yes or no, sweetheart?”

She frowned, her eyes still at half-mast of sleep. “I’ll be fine.”

He nodded and gave her a small kiss. “Call me if you need anything, no matter what.”

She hummed again and settled back into the blankets before rolling over.

Calita cracked open an eye and winced at the sun coming in through the curtains. She always left them closed, why were they opened? She was groggy and sore as hell as she worked to sit up in the bed. Her head was throbbing as she turned and spotted the tray Simon had left for her on the table. That’s right. She remembered waking when he’d come back in. Giving the tray a critical glance, she debated eating. The heavy painkillers she was taking demanded she put something on her stomach. She groaned and reached for the tray.

She’d finished the last bite of fruit when someone knocked on the door of her room. She sighed and gingerly shuffled from the bed. Two women stood at the door, a large bouquet in their hands, their faces expectant.

“Yes?”

The women shared a look. One stepped forward. “I’m Charmain, we were supposed to have brunch together yesterday. This is Meghan.”

“Of course, come in please.” She stepped back and allowed them entrance.

They dragged in a hand full of floating balloons behind them. “You poor thing,” Charmain tsked.

“We were at the drugstore yesterday and heard about your accident. Lie down, we’ll take care of this for you.” Meghan guided her back to the edge of her bed.

She was still dazed with sleep and docile as she went along with Meghan.

“Thank you.” Cali grabbed the balloons as the woman passed her. “You guys didn’t have to do this.”

“Nonsense.” Charmain set up the flowers on the coffee table. “We were worried when you didn’t make it to Morton’s. Imagine our surprise when we heard Marcus found you headed in the opposite direction.”

“Where were you going?” Meghan asked. Curiosity had them both on the edge of the chairs in which they sat.

She looked between them confused. “You guys are messing with me, right?”

Charmain frowned. “What do you mean?”

“I got a message from the front desk that said you’d changed the restaurant.”

“What?” Meghan shared a look with Charmain. “No, everyone knows Morton’s has the best brunch. They are the fanciest place within fifty miles of this place.”

Silence fell between them as they all shared a confused look.

“I wonder who called,” Meghan murmured after a moment of awkward silence.

She walked over to the landline in the room, next to the bed and called down to the front desk. Meghan spoke with Tessa a few moments and hung up frowning. “That’s very odd, she said one of us called.”

“Did she give a name?” Charmain sat forward in her chair.

Meghan shook her head. “Do you think it was done on purpose?”

Charmain looked to Calita. “I don’t see why, who would want to hurt you?”

Cali’s blood went cold and she started trembling. She put her hand to her head.

“You know what guys, I’m not feeling very well. I think I will lay down and take a nap,” she whispered.

Meghan clucked in sympathy. “Of course, of course. Let us get out of your hair.”

She and Charmain left and Cali stayed put on the edge of the bed, her mind spinning. Hard trembles wracked her body as she went over the events from yesterday. A knock on the door preceded Selena as she walked into the room without waiting. She rushed to Cali’s side.
