“Are you sure?”

Calita cut her eyes at Selena as they both wandered the empty store front. “I’m positive.”

Selena sighed and walked over to the large window facing the street. “It’s a great location.”

“Isn’t it.” She spun in a circle. Already her mind was full with décor ideas.

“I supposed you’ll want Anna to come with you.”

Calita went over to Selena and hugged her friend from behind, smiling at her pout. “She’s got a knack.”

Selena pat her arms. “I’m happy for you, Calita. When you came here a year ago...” She spun and stared, her eyes wet. “I thought I’d never get my friend back.”

Calita cleared her throat and stepped back. “I’ll never be like I was, Selena.”

“And that’s fine,” Selena rushed to assure her. “I just…David took a lot from you, I’m happy to see you getting some of it back.”

“I know what you mean.” Calita whispered. “I should have listened to you.”

“It doesn’t matter now.”

Calita nodded and walked over to the counter. “The store was built to be retail.” She wiped the corner of her eyes and changed the subject. “I’ll have to make a lot of changes.”

Selena pat the tears from her own cheeks. “I know some people.”

“In this town,” Calita snorted. “I’m sure you know everyone. The builder said he could expand the kitchen. I’m waiting on a price for it.”

“I’m sure Simon won’t mind paying.”

“I’m doing this myself. I have savings, and I can get a business loan for the rest.”

Selena raised an eyebrow. “Well, look at you. I guess I’ll have to get a new kitchen manager.”

Calita laughed, happy the tension was breaking. “I never officially accepted that job. I was supposed to be just kitchen help.”

“I tried.” Her best friend shrugged. “This will be great, Cali.”

“I think so too.”

“Are you sure?” Simon held onto the bar above the window of the passenger side as Gavin took another corner on two wheels.”

“Damnit, Gavin, slow the hell down,” Nate shouted from the back. “I should be the one driving. I’m the sheriff.”

“I am not bumping around in that ancient jeep you love,” Gavin shot back.

“To answer your question, yes, we’re sure,” Nate said before checking to be sure his deputies were still behind them.

“Why?” Simon turned to look at his cousin.

Nate shrugged. “We’ll find out shortly.”

Gavin slowed as they turned off the main road onto a dirt road. He pulled his truck into a nicely kempt yard where a small sedan sat caddy corner to the front door, its trunk open.

“Looks like we got here just in time.” Simon cursed and pushed the door open as Gavin pulled up.
