Chapter 14

Why did such a small kiss affect her? Maybe she was still half asleep. Yeah, that’s why her body still buzzed nearly thirty minutes after Derrick had kissed her. The night had turned navy, the stars slowly dimming as the new day beckoned. She watched the city go by as Derrick drove through the quiet streets on their way to the prowl house.

It was a strange night that was for sure. Carlos had called her love, and Derrick kissed her again. Her hands shook as she brushed them down her pants. She wanted them both. She breathed out a hard breath. Her grandparents were the perfect example of how well a Tribond could work, so she knew it was possible and how happy the couples were. Hell, just the thought of having them both made her hot. It just wasn’t for her. She was latent, dating a shifter that high in the hierarchy was out for her. Especially an Alpha. The women in the prowl would challenge her at every meeting, besides that, she couldn’t ignore the prophecy.

Her aunt...she sighed, it was years ago. She shook her head and banished the thoughts.

They pulled into a garage entrance of the condo building. She didn’t know what she was expecting, this elegant building was not it. Derrick gave her a longing look, sighed and exited the truck. He came around the side and opened her door before opening the back and reaching for her son. She stepped down out of the front seat and grabbed their bag. She turned and watched as Derrick carefully extracted her sleeping son from the back seat. Jamie shuffled a little before settling his head across Derrick’s shoulder and she melted. It made her think about him in a domestic capacity and it was dangerous thinking.

Derrick held out his hand and she grabbed it without hesitation. She looked down at their joined hands and wished things were simple.

Jamie’s head popped up and he gave her a groggy look. “Where are we going?”

“We’re going to stay with the prowl for a couple days.” She gave him a reassuring smile.

“Yes!” he whispered and lay his head back down.

She couldn’t help but smile. Jamie was nothing if not predictable. He loved spending time with the prowl. Guilt tried to wiggle in but she squashed it. She never deprived Jamie when it came to the prowl, doing the best she could with the cards fate had dealt her.

She thought about what Carlos had told her as they trekked through the parking garage. “Do you think I could be in any danger?”

Derrick turned to her for a moment and she was blasted by the longing in his eyes. “Don’t worry, we’ll keep you and Jamie safe.”

She nodded, she had no doubt that he’d try his hardest to keep them safe. She squeezed his hand. There were people milling around as they reached the entrance of the building. She tried to ignore the looks of his prowl mates as they passed. She didn’t recognize any of the faces, so they had to be members that had come down with Carlos.

Derrick loaded them into the elevator and up to the third floor. Curiosity had her glancing around the hallway as he led them to an apartment. A part of her was redecorating in her mind. It was a good distraction from the way Derrick made her feel. She followed him inside and her eyes widened at the large apartment. Carlos’ walls were chocolate, the dark hardwood floors matching. His sofa and love chairs were various shades of taupe, a large rug pulled together the living room. His windows, floor to ceiling covered one wall and with the curtains open, the city lights from downtown were twinkling in the early morning sky and kept the room from feeling dark.

“I’ll take Jamie into Ella’s room, they are all hunkered down in there.” He told her, lifting her hand and brushing a kiss across her knuckles.

She nodded absently, as she glanced around the place. Laura was pacing in the living room area, her husband on the couch with a worried look on his face. Savannah immediately went to her friend and hugged her.

“Are you okay?”

Laura’s breath shuddered out, her eyes red from what could only be crying. “My friend was attacked.”

“I’m so sorry, Laura. Don’t worry about the boys, I’ll take care of them while the prowl deals with this.” She assured her.

Laura gripped her tight, rubbing her cheek against Savannah’s. Savi frowned as her power raised, and her friend relaxed. It was odd, and something that had never happened to her.

She shrugged away the foreign feeling and stepped back, keeping a hold of Laura’s hands. “Where’s Felix?”

No sooner than she asked the question, the heat of his power warmed her back. He settled his hands on her shoulder and nuzzled against the back of her neck. She shuddered as need swamped her body. Her power raised as it always seemed to do in his presence, but instead of suppressing it, she closed her eyes and reveled in it for just a moment. Just five minutes ago she reminded herself that she didn’t do shifters, but with him touching her, she pushed that worry aside.

Carlos inhaled deeply, barely stilling his hips to keep from grinding his hard-on into her back. He wanted to kiss her, hell, he wanted more than that. Like his Beta, he too was tired of waiting for their mate. Her scent filled him and his cat roamed his body in complete happiness.

“Thank you for watching the kids.” He murmured against her skin, knowing he was taking liberties.

“No problem, though I’m sure you have enough enforcers to leave with them.” She turned around and raised a brow.

He smiled. He’d wondered how long it would take her to see through his ruse. “Yes, I could have, but the kids would prefer you.”

“And you wanted me under guard.” She narrowed her eyes.

“When you say it like that it sounds manipulative.” He pulled her closer. He considered it a small victory when she didn’t move back.

“Perhaps because it was,” she said, running her hands down his arms.

He leaned over and nuzzled under her chin. His panther purred, power running down his arm and over her. She tilted her head to the side and that gave him better access and was a good sign as far as he was concerned. He couldn't resist a little bite. Nothing to break the skin, just a little nibble. He licked the spot to mark her skin with his scent.
