“Most likely,” I snickered. “Not that I’m complaining.”

“I’d hope not. It sounds like it’s exactly the life you deserve.”

 I smiled. “It’s like a dream.”

 “But it’s not.”

 “Yeah.”

Her hand lingered as she walked towards the door until it was no longer touching me.

“Come on,” she said, picking up a box. “Let’s do this.”

 “Yeah.”

I grabbed a box, then turned to look at the room. It felt weird knowing I’d no longer live there.

But it was wonderful as well.

 ~September~

I glanced up at a knock on my office door to see the new executive receptionist, Micah, standing there.

“What’s up?” I asked, still getting used to being in a supervisory role, even if he was the only person I was supervising.

“You know that meeting you wanted me to handle prep for?”

 “Yeah?”

“I was going over the guidelines for what refreshments to provide, but the times are odd, so I don’t know which applies.”

I leaned back in my chair and smiled. “What’s your gut tell you?”

He blinked at me a couple of times, then walked over and sat across from me. “It starts in the morning, so coffee, tea, and light pastries would be ideal. But then it continues in the afternoon, and a switch to soda and cool drinks would be appropriate.”

I nodded. “So if I weren’t here, what would you do?”

He rubbed the side of his neck. “Both?”

“Exactly. It starts late enough in the morning that some might want cold beverages anyway, and some like coffee and tea in the afternoon. Provide both. They’ll likely go out for a working lunch, so refreshments on either side can be light. Nothing crunchy since they’ll be in discussion and won’t want that kind of distraction. A fruit platter and pastries in the morning should do, and maybe a vegetable tray and finger sandwiches mid-afternoon.”

He nodded and breathed a sigh of relief. “Thank you. That’s about what I was thinking, but I wanted to be sure.”

I smiled. “No problem. And make sure to have a few bottles of champagne in the fridge, maybe some dessert offerings too, just in case everything goes well.”

 “Ok.”

 “Anything else?”

I shook my head. “You have the contact information for the catering service we use, and we authorized you to schedule services. I can go over everything before you place the order if you’d prefer.”

He smiled, a blush tinting his cheeks. “That’s ok?”

I nodded. “It’s fine. It’s your first big meeting. You’ll get the hang of it soon enough, but feel free to ask when you think my opinion is needed.”

 “Thank you.”
