“Hmm? For what?”
“For making me apply to that job. If you hadn’t forced me into it, none of this would have happened.” I looked down and rested my hand on my stomach, where I was certain a baby was already growing, even if I couldn’t test yet. “I met four incredible men whom I love, feel supported at work in a way I never knew was possible, and will be a papa soon. It’s all thanks to you.”
She wrapped her arms around me again, making me drop the freshly folded shirts. “I always knew it was a good job for you, it just turned out better than expected.”
I turned to hug her but paused when Owen called out from the entry.
“Bug? Where are you?”
“In the bedroom,” I yelled back.
He appeared in the doorway a moment later, Alonzo standing right behind him. “Ready?”
I nodded and pointed to a stack of boxes next to the door. “Almost done, but those can go.”
“Great.” He grabbed a box, passed it to Alonzo, then picked up two for himself.
“They’re getting close,” Alicia noted.
I smiled. “Yeah. The others are still a bit unsure about Owen and I, but Alonzo sees him for what he is—the man who was there all those years. They’ve even hung out together a few times.”
“That’s good. Family and mates need to get along.”
“Yeah, but I think we’re safe. Mama and Dad love them, and Owen and Jace are on good terms. I haven’t met everybody’s parents yet, but so far so good.”
“Who’s left?”
I chuckled. “Alonzo’s. They’re pretty busy and live a few hours away. Coordinating a time when we can go down there and they have a day off is difficult. Seems they’re the ‘go to’ catering company in town.”
She laughed. “Sounds like a good problem to have.”
“Yeah. And I did meet them briefly when they came up for his birthday, so I’m not a complete stranger. It’s the more traditional introduction that’s delayed. But we’ll get there.”
“Bring me back some tamales when you go down there? Those leftovers from that party were amazing.”
“I’ll see what I can do.”
I finished getting clothes in the box and closed it before they could escape again. Then I stood and looked around my bedroom.
“You sure about leaving the furniture and some of our shared things?” Alicia asked.
I nodded. “I can list it online if needed, but it might help you find a roommate if they aren’t coming with their own things.”
“Ok. I’ll let you know when I do.”
“Cool.”
I pulled her into a hug. “Thanks for being such a great roommate.”
“Back at ya.”
“We’ll go do something fun soon.”
“Damn straight. And you can always stop by work for coffee.”
“I’ll start going in with Linden.”
“Perfect.” She kissed my cheek, then turned and patted my back. “Come on. I’m sure your mates are ready to get you home and get your pants off.”
