“That’s a myth.”

“No, it’s not. One of the other couples down there fought it, and the omega, Cody, was in pain the entire time.”

“That pain would still be there!” I screamed. “You don’t get it! I can’t just go down there and ravish him! I might never be able to! He’s a handsome man, but I don’t know him. I don’t have a connection.”

“Then take the time to get to know him! Corey is one of the most patient people I know. If anybody can give you the space to let a relationship form, it’s him.”

“I won’t give him false hope. Those feelings might not develop, even if I do know him better.”

“So you’re going to give him no hope at all?”

“He can move on this way.”

Zaya pounded on the door again, then I heard him walk away.

A slim part of me hoped that he’d seen reason, and would understand that this was for the best. But most of me knew better. Cadence—or one of the other alphas downstairs—would be next.

Sure enough, it was only a few minutes before fresh footsteps sounded outside the door, then somebody sitting on the floor.

“You need to talk to him,” Cadence stated.

 “There’s nothing to say.”

“I can’t believe you’d be so cruel and heartless. Corey has a million questions, and you’re not willing to give him a single answer?”

“You think it’s better for me to tell him—my fated mate—that I’m not sexually attracted to him because I don’t know him? That I feel nothing romantic towards him because he’s a stranger?”

 “Yes!”

“Well, I don’t! He’s a good-looking man, and I can’t think of anything worse to tell him right now.”

“He’s more understanding than you’re giving him credit for. Just talk to him.”

“No matter what I say, I can’t meet the expectations that society has taught him. I can’t even meet what biology expects. I saw it, Cadence! He was already getting aroused just from seeing me!”

“A case of blue balls won’t kill him,” he shouted.

“Maybe not today, but how long will he wait?”

“Ask him, not me.” He paused, and let out a loud sigh. “Just go down there and talk to him. Fate picked him for a reason. Do you really think you’d have a mate who wouldn’t appreciate who you are as a person?”

The words struck a chord. Would fate pair me with a man who couldn’t accept me?

The memory of Corey’s tented pants came to mind, and I shuddered. Was there really any way that he could understand?

“Just…” I growled. “Go away. Just leave me alone.”

The sound of Cadence standing. “You’re making a mistake,” he said before stomping off.

I sighed and rested my head against the door.

“No,” I whispered. “The mistake was fate pairing an omega whom everybody loves, with an alpha who can’t match his enthusiasm.”

My phone buzzed in my pocket, and I knew it would be one of three people: Zaya, Cadence, or Papa. My mind was made up though. I had to get out of Harris Cove, and give Corey a chance to get over me.

I pulled my phone out of my pocket, and, as expected, the text was from Zaya.
