“He ran…” I whispered.
“I know,” David replied, in what was his normally reassuring tone. “It’ll be ok. He probably has a reason.”
“He ran…” I whimpered before bursting into tears.
David and Cody helped me to a chair. Gabe, I think, handed me a bottle of water. One of the alphas growled in frustration, but I couldn’t pinpoint who.
“What the hell was that?” Alan snarled, pacing back and forth in front of me.
Cadence sighed from near the hallway that my alpha and Zaya had disappeared into. “It’s…” He blew out a long breath. “Zaya will talk to him, don’t worry. Just know that he has his reasons.”
“What could possibly be a reason strong enough that he’d look at a man like Corey and panic?” Alan demanded.
“Look,” Cadence snapped. “It’s not my place to talk about it. I’m no happier about this than you are, but honestly, this is the best outcome.”
“Best outcome?” somebody behind me asked—Christian if I placed the voice properly. “You mean there are worse possibilities?”
“Yes,” Cadence sighed. “At least we can talk to him like this. He was always going to run, no matter who it was. But right now, we have a chance to do damage control.”
“He was always going to run?” I sniffled. “Like Cody?”
Cadence knelt in front of me. “In a way, yes.”
I wiped my tears away, though more threatened to spill.
“Why?”
Cadence shook his head. “That’s for you and him to work out. But trust me, I don’t think fate could have picked a more patient and kind man for him, which is what he needs. And once you get to know him, I know you’ll understand, and cherish the bond even more.”
I took a deep breath and gave a timid nod. “Ok.”
Chapter 6 - Nate
“What the fuck Nate?” Zaya demanded from the other side of the door.
“Go away Zaya,” I growled.
“Like hell! You didn’t see the expression on Corey’s face after you ran. One of my friends is downstairs, absolutely devastated that his fated mate took one look at him and bolted.”
“I can’t be what he expects!”
“You don’t know that.”
“But I do!”
“How? You haven’t said two words to him. You just ran away and left an omega thinking his fated mate had rejected him on sight.”
“It’s better he thinks that. It’ll let him find a mate who can be what he needs.”
“It doesn’t work like that, and you know it.”
“Maybe it does.”
Zaya pounded on the door. “You’re a fucking asshole! You know that?”
“It’s better this way.”
“How? By putting him through the physical pain of an unconsummated mating?”
