“Is this omega you’re pining for really worth it?”

I looked at him and nodded. “Yes. Yes he is.”

“Then stop moping and go after him.”

 “It’s not that easy.”

“Make it that easy, or move on. Don’t torture yourself.”

I wadded up a piece of paper and threw it at him. “Go on, back to your own work.”

He laughed. “Don’t get mad at me because I tell you what you already know.”

I flipped him off. “Go chase Avery’s ass and stay off mine.”

“Believe me, I’d be all over him if I thought there was an inkling of a chance, but he’s got his sights firmly set on you.”

“The one man in here who’s not after him.”

“Funny how that works.” Morgan said as he left my office. “Later.”

 “Later.”

I took a deep breath and let it out slowly. Maybe I did need to move on, but the alpha side of me still insisted that it was Wes or nobody.

“Morning Abuela,” I said, leaning in to kiss my grandmother’s cheek.

She smiled up at me and patted my cheek. “You’re late mijo.”

 “Sorry Abuela.”

She handed me a tray of marinated meat. “Take this out to your abuelo.”

 “Ok.”

I carried the tray out back to where my grandfather was manning a smoker, and my father and uncles were keeping warm around the fire pit.

“Abuela sent this out for you,” I said, setting the tray of meat on the table.

“José! It’s about time you showed up.”

I laughed. “You all know I’m sluggish in the winter.”

“And the rest of us have to pick up your slack,” he chided.

I looked around again and motioned to the group of alphas around the fire pit. “I think you’ve got it covered.”

Abuelo laughed and smacked me on the back. “Ay mijo, don’t be a smartass.”

“Better a smartass than a dumbass,” my father, Jorge, chimed in from his place near the fire, making all the other men laugh.

“Don’t you let your mama hear you talking like that,” Abuelo replied. “You’re not too old for her to put over her knee.”

I snickered and accepted the empty tray to take back inside, where I found Abuela stirring a pot of posole.

I took a deep breath, savoring the scents of marinated pork and spicy chile. “Smells delicious.”
