“Gracias.”

“Do you need me to take anything else outside?”

She shook her head. “No.”

“I’m going to go catch up with Miguel then.”

“Ok.”

I walked past where my mama and aunts were making tortillas, and found my cousin sitting in the living room, hand resting on his very pregnant stomach.

“You look about ready to pop,” I said, taking a chair next to him.

Miguel nodded. “Another two weeks, though I wouldn’t mind if she came early.”

“You ready to be a papa?”

He sighed. “I don’t know. It’s scary. Most days I feel like I can barely take care of myself. How am I supposed to keep something so small and fragile alive?”

“You’ll have Eduardo to help.”

He smiled. “Yeah. I did get the best alpha.”

I looked around. “Where is he?”

“There was an injured horse, so Dom had to call him into work today. He should be here later this afternoon though.”

“That’s good. Is he still enjoying working with Dom?”

Miguel grinned. “Yeah. He seems much happier working with the large animals.”

“No more complaints about impatient pet owners?”

He laughed. “Nope. Large animals and livestock means a different kind of owner.”

I smiled, then noticed him shift uncomfortably. “Want me to get a pillow for your back?” I asked.

Miguel nodded and grimaced. “That would be great, actually. And a refill on my cider while you’re up?”

“You got it.”

I stood to retrieve a pillow and get Miguel another cup of hot cider. One day it would be a mate of mine needing something small like that, and I knew any of my relatives would jump into action. It was what we did.

There were people who would scoff at our monthly family get-togethers, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. They were hectic, but let us stay close.

I just wished I could introduce Wes to the supportive insanity that was my family. He’d been an only-child with his relatives mostly on the east coast, and had always seemed jealous when I told him stories about the family, but…

I shook my head. There had been plenty of time since Wes moved out of his parents’ house. If he’d wanted me he could have made a move since then.

I’d let him down, and he realized I wasn’t the alpha for him.

I needed to move on, no matter how much I still loved him.

Chapter 5 - Wes

My dad looked at me and gave me a curt nod. “At least you put in a bit of effort.”

I bristled, but forced myself not to show it. I’d learned long ago that I would never be good enough for my parents. ‘Effort’ in this case meant a tie and sports jacket, despite the restaurant being nowhere near fancy enough to require it. I would have been fine in a sweater and slacks, but they’d have had a conniption fit if I’d arrived that way.
