“Agreed,” papa said. “But maybe it’s for the best. I would not have a man like that as my son-in-law. I’d rather learn that he’s flighty now, than later in the process.”
“You have a point, omega-mine,” dad said, kissing papa’s temple.
Papa hummed happily, a reminder that they really did love each other, even if they didn’t show it often.
Dad gave papa another kiss, then turned to me. “We’ll schedule your flight for tomorrow morning. Behave tonight.”
I took a deep breath. It wasn’t as if I was going to do anything anyway. “Yes, sir.”
Chapter 7 - Zaya
I stepped out of the sedan just behind Jessalynn and pulled her into a hug. “I owe you.”
She turned in my arms and laughed. “Hell no you don’t. That was fun!”
“I still can’t believe we pulled it off.”
“It was a good thing you waited until the last minute to sneak out. I was wondering, then you texted that your dad had checked in on you.”
“It was a good thing you’d scheduled tarmac service,” I laughed. “Nothing was stopping us once I was in the car.”
I stepped back, releasing her. “Seriously though. I don’t know what I would have done if it wasn’t for you. But there was no way I was sitting through a meeting like that.”
She scrunched her nose. “I don’t blame you. It’s downright insulting.”
I nodded and turned to go into the rental car place.
“Do you need me to lend you any money?” Jessalynn asked. “I’d imagine your parents are already watching any of the cards they give you.”
I laughed. “One side-effect of my work is that I have cards and accounts they don’t know about or have access to, so that I can easily track expenses. Even the family accountant doesn’t have access. Only me, and my business accountant. I already talked to him and he’s aware that there are going to be a few personal transactions. As long as I don’t go overboard he’s fine with it, though he did say, and I quote, ‘take a few photos or something for later posting, so that it can actually become a business expense.’”
Jessalynn grinned. “Well, there are some fantastic overlooks on the highway up to Harris Cove, and you will be in a rental car. So stop and take some photos.”
I beamed at her. “Have I mentioned that you’re the best?”
“Yes, but feel free to keep saying it.”
“You’re the best.”
She grinned and pulled me into another hug. “You have the door code for my family’s beach house?”
“Yep.”
“I’ve already called the management agency that takes care of it. They should have it all prepped by the time you arrive, and I’ll be there next week.”
“Thanks for giving me a place to hide and hang out while I figure out what to do next.”
“Do you think you can really avoid these meetings?”
I stepped out of her hug. “I don’t know. I want to say that I’m at the point where I can live off my influencer gig, if I make some changes and accept more sponsored posts. But things will have to change. I’ll have to get more strategic about trips, and will probably have to sell my condo. The taxes alone will be outrageous without the family support.”
“It’ll be a big change in lifestyle.”
I sighed. “I know. We’ll just have to hope that I’m up to it, and don’t have to go crawling back to dad and papa.”
“Well I’ll help when I can. We can coordinate when I know I’m going somewhere so you can take the plane with me. And I can probably sweet talk the marketing team into budgeting you some discounts, if not free stays, at any of our resorts. Beyond the ones you’d get when traveling with me anyway.”
“Thanks Jess.”
