I watched other cars on the highway, part of me wondering if the omega we were about to meet was in one.
Would he arrive at the same time as us, or did he go early?
What was he like?
Nate reached over, leaving one hand on the wheel, and took one of my hands in his free one. He squeezed, running his thumb over the backs of my fingers.
“Is there anything else you want to do while we’re there?” he asked.
“We should go to that specialty grocer you like,” I replied.
He chuckled. “Good idea. Wanna get lunch at that Vietnamese place too?”
I smiled. “A late lunch date after meeting with a potential surrogate. Sounds like a good day to me.”
He turned my hand under his and tangled our fingers together. “It’s a date.”
Nate was my rock. Through everything, he’d been there: every failed adoption, and every time the disappointment overwhelmed me. I couldn’t imagine a better man as my husband, even if most people didn’t understand an alpha-alpha relationship.
We chatted, keeping the conversation light as Nate drove. Finally we pulled into the parking lot of the surrogacy agency.
Nate reached over again and squeezed my hand. “We’re just meeting him, ok? No decisions today.”
I nodded. Then we made our way inside, where the receptionist guided us to a pastel-colored meeting room.
A few minutes later the door opened, and we got our first look at the potential surrogate as our rep Alice escorted him in. He was handsome, and many of his features reminded me of Nate. His hair was a bit darker, and he had glasses and a beard, but it was almost like he was a smaller sized version of my husband.
Then his scent hit me, and for a moment my alpha side was confused. It was sweet, like I’d imagined my omega’s scent would be like when I was a teen, before Nate and I fell in love. But my alpha side didn’t react strongly at all.
It was like my alpha side wanted to react to him, but seemed to want to treat him as mated at the same time.
Nate glanced over, and I could see the same confusion in his eyes. Then he stood and extended a hand. “It’s a pleasure to meet you,” he said.
I rushed to my feet and offered my hand as well, which the omega shook with a firm grip.
Alice smiled. “This is Doctor Nate and Mister Tyler Donahue,” she said, then turned to the omega. “Gentlemen, this is Mister Rick Thomas.”
The omega, Rick, blinked. “Doctor?” He turned to Alice. “I thought I was meeting with prospective parents today, not more specialists.”
She chuckled and motioned to the seats across from us. “I assure you. These gentlemen are indeed the prospective parents.”
He blushed adorably, and it made my cock twitch. I was a happily married man, so why was I suddenly interested in this sweet-looking omega?
For a second I imagined him round with my child, and shivered.
No,I scolded myself.Don’t think of him like that.
“Oh, sorry,” Rick said, breaking me from my thoughts.
Finally we all took our seats.
Part of me expected us to address the elephant in the room first, but instead Alice guided us through a traditional meet and greet. We got to know a bit more about Rick: that he worked in human resources, moved inland from the northwest coast, and was in his early thirties.
But there were obvious areas he was actively avoiding. He described his earlier pregnancy as healthy, but deflected almost immediately when Nate tried to ask more questions.
On the other hand, he seemed relaxed when asking us questions. He smiled when he learned that I was a nurse, in addition to Nate being a doctor. He asked how we would handle shifts, and if we had childcare available if we were both called in.
Most importantly, he didn’t seem fazed at all that Nate and I were both alphas. His focus was on the baby, and the kind of life they would have. He asked about siblings, and smiled when both Nate and I informed him that we wanted a full and happy family.
