Before I knew it, the two-hour meeting was over.

“This was a good meeting,” Alice said, wrapping things up. “Normally we like followup meetings to take place here in the office. But given that it’s a drive for everybody, I’ll ok future meetings in Mountain Springs, on the condition that you schedule at least the next two through me. This is, of course, on the assumption that everybody wants to move forward. I’ll give you a couple days to think about it then let me know if you wish to proceed or if we need to look for new matches.”

We all nodded, then stood and shook hands again.

Alice led Rick through the door first, and I noticed the edge of a scar peeking out over the top of his shirt collar.

I didn’t think anything of it, but I felt Nate stiffen beside me.

“Nate?” I asked.

He shook his head. “Once we’re in the car.”

I nodded, but the look on his face was unreadable.

A few minutes later we closed the car doors, buckled up and he guided us out of the parking lot.

“What is it?” I finally asked as he pulled onto the street.

“Did you see the scar on his neck?” he asked, hands tightening on the steering wheel.

“Yeah?” I asked. “What about it?”

He shook his head. “He hides it well. I almost didn’t see it myself.”

“It’s just a scar, isn’t it?”

“No.” He sighed. “Think about where it was, and how your alpha side reacted to him.”

A stone started to form in the pit of my stomach. “You mean…”

He nodded. “He’s had his bond medically severed.”

I felt the blood drain from my face at the confirmation. In all my years of nursing, I’d never met an omega with a severed bond, they were that rare. “Are you sure?”

“I…” he started. “Of course not, but it’s the only thing I can think of. He was extremely guarded about his previous pregnancies, and didn’t mention a mate at all. But my alpha side didn’t know how to react, like he was both mated, and not.”

“You’re right,” I replied, remembering my own confusion. “But why would a severed omega want to be a surrogate?”

“I don’t know,” Nate admitted. “But it makes sense why we were the first couple contacted. We’re both medical professionals. In terms of oversight, they couldn’t ask for a more ideal couple. In addition to their team, and his medical team, as involved as we’d want to be… there would be no way that he wouldn’t have plenty of people who knew what to do around him.”

I frowned. “So… we’re convenient for him.”

“Yeah.”

I’d actually thought I liked the sweet omega. He’d seemed like a good choice: a man who enjoyed his previous pregnancies, had an even temperament, and had the background we were looking for. But knowing that we were convenient for him soured my opinion.

“Ty?”

I blinked, and realized that Nate had been trying to get my attention. “Yeah?”

“I can smell your disappointment. But…” he sighed. “Don’t write off this omega yet.”

“Why not?”

He shook his head again. “I can’t put my finger on it. But I have the feeling there’s more that we don’t know yet. I think…” he paused. “I think he needs us.”

“Needs… us?”
