Keira blushed. She hadn’t known her cheeks could even do that. It felt kind of nice. But there was only so much blushing she could put up with. ‘So I’m gonna go and get in the shower, get all this egg off me,’ Keira said, looking down at herself. ‘But if I was in there and maybe you decided to de-egg yourself, too, and you don’t mind the company…’ Keira said, hoping Alanna would see that this proposition was not like last time. She wanted to be intimate with Alanna for the exact opposite reason. She wanted her close.

Alanna smiled nervously. ‘Iamrather worried about contracting salmonella.’ Her smiled dropped. ‘Nice, Alanna. A sexy and not at all boring thing to say.’

Keira laughed, more in love with Alanna than before. She felt as happy as she ever had in her whole life. She couldn’t believe how close she’d come to robbing herself of this moment out of pure fear. That’s all that had ever stood in her way. It was still there. Because she didn’t know what came next or if she could handle it. But she had to believe that there was a chance that it would be alright. Because she trusted Alanna. So maybe if she could trust her, then she could trust herself, too. She was going to rocket off into the unknown, but her co-pilot seemed reliable and capable. Those words had never been so hot.

‘Come on,’ she said, taking Alanna’s hand. Alanna smiled at her, and she felt that feeling again, that burst of love and happiness. How life could change this much in a few short minutes was blowing her mind. If Kelly hadn’t decided at that very moment to pelt her car with eggs, she wasn’t sure where she’d be now. Maybe not here with Alanna, standing on the precipice of everything she’d been frightened to even want.

She didn’t want to dwell on that. Because she was here.

Thirty-Five

They walked toward the elevator, and Alanna hit the call button, leaving small traces of yellow on the button. She wiped it quickly with her sleeve. ‘Damn it.’

‘I think you got it all,’ Keira assured her as the elevator doors opened. They stepped inside. They faced each other as the doors shut. Alanna thought they would probably wait until they got into the flat, they’d been utterly chaste with each other until now, and Alanna felt that a few minutes more could be waited. But something about standing in that little box together had an effect. They were looking at each other, covered in raw egg, and they knew it couldn’t wait even a second.

They moved towards each other. Their noses bumped, and they both laughed and tried again, finding each other perfectly the second time. Keira, it came as no surprise to learn, kissed flawlessly, passionately. But this wasn’t about skill. The chemistry blew Alanna’s hair back. It was hard to believe Keira didn’t feel the same, but Alanna’s doubt’s crept in. After several minutes, Alanna pulled back and said, ‘Whew.’

‘I know,’ Keira agreed.

‘So that was… It was alright?’

‘Alanna… I’ve never been kissed like that in my life.’

Alanna was amazed but trusted Keira enough to believe it. She leant in and kissed Keira again. It was even hotter, even more electric. Alanna could have kissed those lips forever.

After a long while, they reached a natural stopping point, and Keira glanced at the elevator doors. ‘Shouldn’t we be on our floor by now?’

Alanna looked at the elevator screen. ‘I think we forgot to push a button.’

‘I dunno aboutthat,’ Keira said. She laughed. ‘Shit, I’m not usually this cheesy.’

‘You seemnervous,’ Alanna noted.

‘That’s because I am,’ Keira told her.

‘You don’t know how much of a relief that is,’ Alanna said. ‘I’m sweating right now.’

‘So we’re both scared. Are we supposed to be?’

‘I don’t know. Maybe?’ Alanna shrugged.

‘You don’t know?’

‘I’ve been in relationships. None of them started like this.’

‘With you pretending to be someone’s girlfriend so they could screw people without consequences?’ Keira asked.

‘Actually, I meant I don’t think I’ve liked anyone as much as you,’ Alanna said, dipping her head. Eye contact was so hard right now.

‘So this is new for both of us. We’rebothidiots.’ She grinned at Alanna. ‘What can go wrong?’

‘Everything,’ Alanna answered. ‘I think that’s why we’re scared.’

Keira’s smile dropped. ‘Right. Shit.’

‘Maybe we should just go upstairs before we keep panicking,’ Alanna suggested.

‘Good plan.’ Keira hit the button for their floor. The elevator moved off.
