Chapter Sixteen

Brooke’s heart beat a solid, fast staccato. We’ve got him!

Whoeverhewas. After all these years, she might finally get some answers to who her childhood attacker might be.

Roman released her from the hug and held her at arm’s length. “I’ll take Win with me. You stay here with Polly, review the footage of the crowds, and see if you can spot that bastard on it. You might be able to get a better description of what he’s wearing, if he spoke to anyone, etc.”

“I’m going with you.”

“So am I,” Polly said, walking up behind them.

Roman shot Polly a look and shook his head before he spoke to Brooke. “I know you’re upset and you feel guilty over what happened, but he’s a killer, Brooke. It’s too dangerous.”

“I admit I feel guilty, but mostly I’m angry.” She gripped his arms in return to emphasize the point. “I want to look this asshole in the face once he’s in custody so I can ask him who the hell he thinks he is.”

“Once he’s in custody, you’ll have my blessing. Until then, you’re staying safe.”

She huffed. “I’m going with you.”

“No.”

He started to walk away. She felt like stomping her foot. Instead she reached out and stopped him. “You said I was part of your team and now you’re just going to dump me? I don’t think so.”

There was something in his eyes, something sad. “You are part of this team, but this guy is quite likely the one stalking you.”

“I have a gun and you taught me how to shoot it. He should be scared of me!”

His face morphed from sadness to frustration. “It would be careless of me to let you go after him.”

“You’regoing after him, I’m just riding along.”

“No.”

“Fine.” She pulled out her cell. “I’ll call a cab. I’ll call the SCVC Taskforce. I’ll hijack Pastor Rogers’ car if I have to and drive myself, but one way or the other, I’m in this thing to the end.”

“There’s no way I can talk you into staying here, is there?”

“Hell no.” He was teetering. She needed to give him a reason to cave. “I’ll concede to staying in the car when we get wherever we’re going, because truth be told, I might be tempted to draw the Glock from my purse and shoot this asshole before you get any answers out of him, but I willnotbe left behind after I’ve been so instrumental in figuring out his identity and helping you find him.”

Detective Clyffe returned. “Name’s Douglas Weber.” He rattled off Weber’s home address. “Got an APB on him and officers are on their way to his place now.”

A ding came from Polly’s tablet. “Gotcha,” she said with a smile. She looked up. “Cameras caught the Tahoe running northeast. He’s on S Bay Freeway, CA 54.”

“But his apartment is southwest,” Clyffe said, scanning the notes on his phone.

“He’s not heading home.” Roman pointed at Win, who came jogging up. “The guy’s name is Douglas Weber and Clyffe has his home address. Call Nadia and tell her to get over to this guy’s apartment, see if she can find anything that can tell us where he might be headed in case we lose him. Meanwhile, you and Polly follow us and we’ll see if we can catch up to him.”

“Already sent you the address,” Clyffe said to Win as he pocketed his phone. “I’ll tag along too, if you don’t mind.”

“The more the merrier,” Roman said.

Brooke scoffed and Roman sent her a chastising look.

Win had his phone out, calling Nadia as all of them headed for their vehicles.

“Where do you think he’s going?” Polly asked.

“He’s meeting up with The Reverend.” Brooke was sure of it. “Hoping he’ll hide him.”
