Roman ran, jetting for the stairs. “Stay here!” he yelled at Brooke as he barreled out of the room.

Halfway down the stairs, he hopped the railing, keeping his knees bent and going into a roll when he hit. He gained his feet, saw Detective Clyffe nearby and waved at him. “Follow me!”

They sped out of the mission doors and down the steps, heading for the spot where the ambulance had been.

But his prey had gotten away.

Roman banged a hand against the light pole and swore under his breath as he scanned the area. He had no idea which way the guy had gone.

As he explained the situation to Clyffe in between gulps of air, Brooke came hustling up.

“He went north,” she said pointing. “I watched him get in his truck half a block from here. Polly already called someone at the DOT and they’re scanning traffic cams for him.”

“Did she get a plate from the video?” Roman asked.

“No, but Win did.” She cracked a smile and showed him a blurry still photo of the back of the vehicle from where it had been parked. “We can only make out three of the numbers, but Polly says it will be enough.”

“I’ll get someone to plug them in asap,” Clyffe said, walking away to make a call.

Roman couldn’t help it, he reached out and wrapped Brooke in a hug. “We’ve got him, Brooke.”

“Technically not yet.” To his relief she hugged him back. “But we will soon. He’ll never hurt anyone again.”

“And whoever he’s working with or for is about to go down with him.”
