When Bay contacted me a few months ago about his proposal, he already had one investor—his new wife—but he knew I wanted to give back to our brothers in arms. Plus, he’s still in that honeymoon phase with Jessa.
I’m happy for my friend—I really am, but it made me restless, yearning for what he had. It wasn’t until I went into town one day after moving into a rental cabin while overseeing the project that I found mine.
Autumn was working the cash register at the local bakery with a big smile on her face, and her infectious laughter was something I could listen to all day. But I wasn’t ready to reveal myself yet. I needed a plan because that’s what I do—I’m a planner. It’s what made me an asset to the Army intelligence department until I retired two years ago.
Since that day, I’ve watched Autumn from the shadows, learning everything I needed to know about her from Bay and Jessa while swearing them to secrecy until I was ready to claim her. Even staying hidden at Jessa and Bay’s wedding. Autumn was one of the bridesmaids, and it took everything in me not to stompout onto the dance floor and lock her away from everyone else, especially that slick-looking creep who kept undressing her with his eyes.
She danced with him once, but when she danced again with that jerk, I nearly lost it. The urge to yank her away, toss her over my shoulder, and drag her out of the reception overwhelmed me. The only thing stopping me was her complete disregard for her dance partner. Not once did she look at him while he spun her around the room. Instead, her eyes were scanning the edges of the dance floor as if she were searching for someone. I swore our eyes met once, but I knew that wasn’t possible because I made sure to stay out of sight.
“I will,” I grunt as I bring down the axe on the piece of wood on the tree stump, trying to keep up with Bay and his brother Brooks in the most wood chopped within fifteen minutes part of the competition.
“You'd better do it soon, a woman like Autumn won’t stay single for long, and you’ve already wasted too much time.”
No shit, Sherlock.
The words are on the tip of my tongue, but Bay doesn’t deserve my sarcasm. It’s my own fault for waiting so long. But it’s finally time.
“I’m going to tell her tonight.” My eyes shift to Autumn, who’s sitting in the front row with Bay’s wife Jessa and his sister-in-law Junie, who just happens to be Autumn’s sister.
Autumn’s eyes are glazed with lust as she watches me chop wood. I’m glad I took my shirt off like the other competitors, if only to see that hunger in her eyes.
“Too bad you aren’t going to win this round.” Bay nods toward his brother Brooks, who is on my other side, and I notice he has the largest pile of chopped wood in front of him as the whistle blows, ending the first round of competition.
The feminine squeal hits my ears as Brooks’s wife leaps into his arms, “You won!”
Brooks kisses her long and passionately before they finally come up for air. “That was only round one--we have six more rounds to go.”
I glance around as the other competitors with wives or girlfriends congratulate their men until my eyes land on Autumn standing a few feet away.
“You did good.” She nods toward my pile of wood. “You got second place.”
“I might need a little more luck from my good luck charm before the next challenge.” I drop the axe and circle her wrists with my hands.
“Is that so?” Her smile goes straight to my cock, and I want nothing more than to throw her over my shoulder, take her back to my cabin, and spend the rest of my life wrapped in her arms.
“Yup.” I gently push her hands behind her back, causing her body to press against mine and make her gasp. Damn that thin t-shirt and her hard nipples pressing against my bare chest. I want nothing more than to forget this whole challenge and come clean with Autumn, but I promised myself I’d prove to her that I’m a real mountain man, not some fake wannabe from the city. “I definitely think I’m going to need those lips on mine for a lot longer if I plan on winning this thing.”
“And what do I get out of it if you win?”
“Not, if, Buttercup. But when I win.”
“Someone is certainly full of himself.”
I bite my tongue and hold back the immediate reply that pops into my head.
No, but I’d like you to be full of me.
“I’ll make sure you are greatly rewarded for your services.” I place my mouth against hers, loving the soft moan that escapes her lips at the contact. Once again, I use it to my advantage and deepen the kiss.
I might be a thirty-four-year-old virgin with no experience, but I must be doing something right, judging by Autumn’s moans and how she’s pressing her breast and pussy against me.
“The next round of the competition will begin in five minutes. Please head to the axe-throwing arena.” The announcer calls over the intercom.
Reluctantly, I release Autumn’s wrists and step back. “I’m going to need that kind of good luck in between each round, Buttercup.”
“We’ll see about that, Dimples.” She winks and walks over to her sister, loops her arm through hers, as they stroll to the next spot in the competition.
“You are so fucked.” Bay slaps my shoulder.
